agar requires very litle sugar, dog food has corn in it, the mushrooms eat it. Casing layers should not have any nutrients in it. Dog foos would be a horrible additive to put in it.
Dog food doesnt have enough nutrients to produce mushroom fruit bodies.
Read up, read up!!

i guess my question wasn't clear. I was most defiantly not asking if i could put dogfood in my substrate /casing layer. im talking about things like Dry Malt Extract - Wheat Formula or https://sporeworks.com/store/product.php?productid=16222&cat=253&page=2 a soybean derived....(sum thing i can add, i didn't say sugar. I said additives for agar. Not, can i add dogfood? i dont know how you got that, and i never mentioned the growth of fruit body's only mycelium. I guess i apreciat that you tried to help me, but im sick of people not answering the question and making a commment that dosnt help. So Tahoe next time your going to answer a question. read man, read.

what is your dfa recipe? just dog food and agar? I doubt it.
Locally, where do you live. You should be able to get malt, brf, dextrose all locally.
They can grow mycelium perfectly but mushrooms need more.
as for adding it to your substrate or casing layer. Your substrate should provide more then enough for the mycelium, the extra additives will do very little. as for the casing layer, it is a great idea to add some dextrose/malt/soybean/dogfood to it. I am wondering why no one has thought of it and someone so well read like yourself doesn't know the answer to the most basic casing question.
Keep this in mind, common sense is free but not everyone has it.

hey man im still a noob to agar im not trying to make it sound like im all knowing. Its just what you said the second time is what you should have said the first time. i mean you had an answer. you didn't have to make it seem like my question wasnt worth asking?.well anyway thanks for the help now i know that more sugar is probably not necessary.

LOL! This is a funny thread. Grod31, if you are new to agar I suggest you study with the fundamental type, (PDA, Malt), etc. etc. Once you have a firm understanding on how to work SUCCESSFULLY with those, then you can fool around with other teks. KEEP IT SIMPLE.

DFA works just fine. I'm not sure where you got your nutritional science degree tahoe, but dog food is mostly corn and will support myc growth and fruiting just fine.
I suggest using PDA as it's very easy to make and is one of the best formulations to use. (MEA being equally good)
