Help ID Berkeley, CA
    #7817308 - 12/31/07 02:31 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Please help me id this find: See attached photos

Habitat: Found in lots of decomposing wood chips and bark, under an advocado tree planted in a garden. Found yesterday evening in Berkley, CA. Not too far from Montclair district.

Stem: White with bluish green bruises. Some almost appearing blackish. Bruising was not caused by my handling, it existed before I touch the mushrooms. Also, they didn't bruise at all when I touched them. Stems range from 3 to 8 cm in height.

Cap: Light brown or tan. Like a paper bag color. Streaks of blue green colors on caps. Caps are about 3 to 5 cm wide.

Spore print color: Colors are difficult for me. I would say it's consistent with what people are describing as purple black or purple brown. Dark colors. See photos. maybe Chocolate purple in color.

Bruising: As I stated before, there is bruising, but it wasn't caused by my handling. Some of the caps were even black. i left the ones with black caps. Bruishing was blue to green, turning almost black in some areas.

Location: Berkely, CA, near Mpntclair District

psilocybe cyanescens. Possibly of the friscosa variety. Yummy.

are you sure they're Cy. I have no wavy caps! I thought they might be Stropharia aeruginosa, which is listed as poisonous. Which is way my girl freaked out.

They are not Stropharia aeruginosa, which incidently I have eaten and not been poisoned by.

Do you agree they're cyanofricosa?

There is no doubt that they are Psilocybe, and likely the friscosa variant of cyanescens.

Review the portion of Mycelium Running that deals with spawning stem butts.  Don't let those butts go to waste!
