I am trying to install a new CD burner.
I got the case open, installed it in place of the failing drive, and then reset.
Drive failure.
Then, I thought I might need to install drivers, but when I did. it didn't do anything.
Any quick fixes??? Yes, it's plugged in.

well, wtf does drive failure mean? Is that an error message that's popping up, does the drive not power on, does it not burn right, what's wrong with it besides "drive failure"?
Because, honestly, if the damn thing doesnt work out of the box there is a chance you got a dead unit and need to go replace it.

You don't need drivers. What position on the IDE cable is it on, and what position is the jumper in?
What is the error you are getting? It the error in Windows, or the POST (bios) screen? Is it recognized on the bios?

Excellent. I don't know what drive failure means. I have tried placing the unit in the each of the two slots my computer has. Each of them, after reset, says Drive Failure.
While looking for Drivers, I found a lot of people saying the drive I got was shit...perhaps it is dead???
Thanks bro.

I reset and it says Drive Failure...so I hit f12 and go into the setup shit. I It has a Master Primary and Slave.
I believe my Hard Drive is Master....

The directions say the hard drive is the primary IDE channel, and any drive I am using are the secondary channels.Install this drive as the master device on the secondary channel and any other devices as slaves to this new drive.

After you press F12 and you see the master and slave listing, do you also see a listing for your hard drive and cd burner?
It sounds like the computer could be trying to boot from the CD Burner...
After you press F12, look for a section that has options for boot settings. Make sure you are booting from the hard drive.
Also, make sure there is no floppy disk in your floppy drive.

First of all you never ever want to run your CD drive on the same IDE cable that your HD is hooked up to. There should be two IDE slots available for you to use on most Motherboards. One slot is for your hard drive(s), the other slot is used to run your optical storage (cd drives). The primary/slave that was being discussed was referring to the order of cd drives you have installed. If you're running only one drive then it is the master and must be setup accordingly. This means locating the jumper in the back of the device, looking up what position it needs to be in with your manual, and setting it. If you're running two drives one needs to be a master and the other a slave. It's been a while but i believe the first of two connectors on the IDE is the master and the last one is the slave (on the end that has two connectors close together). As before your jumpers need to be set correctly.
However from where you're seeing this error im assuming it's the actual drive and not a setup issue. Usually if you have your array configured wrong the system just won't recognize the drives and boot normally. If you can do so cannibalize another drive from a desktop and check it out.

nah, this wouldn't be the case. Even if the machine was set to boot from CD if there's no bootable media in the drive or the drive is not found it just moves on to the next device in the list.

I've found that this isn't always the case. Some systems seem to get stuck on the first one in the boot order, and some will completely bork the boot order when a new device is installed, leaving only one in the lineup.

Alright, when booting it says
Diskette 0 seek failure.
then after several seconds (30)
Primary 1 cannot be found Primary 2 cannot be found
Press 1 to continue or something else to setup. (something approximating this message)
After further reading the directions, I don't think I have a jumper cable, nor ever have I. I think I have two IDE cables and the Master is on the bottom.
What settings should I seek to make sure it's booting from the harddrive.
And how can I make it recognize the new hardware - windows notices it immediately???

well, when you go into setup (which is like F1 or F2 during boot) there should be a setting that allows you to change your boot order. The first device in your list should be your hard drive.
There is no jumper cable, its a switch in the back. The jumper is a little plastic piece that covers pins in the back of the drive. It designates the drive as master/slave/ (one more setting but it's not used often anyways).
Windows should automatically pick up the new hardware and install the drivers for it no problem. You shouldn't have to do anything.
