Need yore input
    #7817207 - 12/31/07 02:02 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Hi,

Here's THE BREAKDOWN:

I had (5) 1 pint jars. PF TEK with BRF/VERM. Wide mouth baby.

I crumbled and cased one of the jars to 50/50 peat moss and vermiculite.

I now have 4 jars left. Should I dunk and roll, or buy some coir and try my luck at another casing? Also, WTF is coir?

seeing as they're cakes, why don't you just dunk, roll and fruit?

crumbling means the cakes have to expend energy (which wastes nutrients) to repair themselves and then also grow through a casing layer which burns more nutrients, so by the time you come to fruiting there ain't as much juice left to grow

if you're doing pf tek, why don't you use half-pints instead of pints

they work better

I know, part of me wants to dunk and roll since it is my first grow.

However, it took an entire month for my jars to reach full colonization. I would feel like that month has been a total waste of my time UNLESS I see lots of fruits. That's the only way it will make that month worthwhile, if I see a significant number of mushrooms.

I do have 4 pints left, could easily make 4 more trays. I need more advice here.

I'm sure a pint cake could produce as much or more fruited normally, than a pint cake cased

it also adds in more room for contaminates via the casing itself

Quoting myself from another thread on the front page of this forum.
Quote:

I'm going to spew my usual load of blurb that I type up when I see people casing cakes on their own.

Quite a few people have compared the differences in fruiting between dunking and rolling the cakes in moist verm versus crumbling the cakes and casing them, and have found that there is very little if any extra yeild. By crumbling the cakes you:

a) risk more contams
b) take longer to get fruits because the mycelium has to repair the damage made by crumbling (if you dunk and roll your cakes, they can start fruiting immediately)
c) your mycelium wastes nutrients it could use to fruit because it has to use them to repair that damage.

On the other hand, crumbling to poo, enriched coir or another bulk substrate adds loads of new nutrients, and once the mycelium has colonized all that substrate is can make lots more fruits.
