Are freezing temps sterile?
    #7814877 - 12/30/07 07:16 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Just a curiosity question. I'm not really sure if bacteria/spores die at a certain freezing temp or just are dormant.

There's bacteria deep in the antarctic ice pack. http://www.nsf.gov/od/lpa/news/press/99/pr9972.htm

Im not surprised at all. Life will find a way to thrive.

So I guess there would be no benifit of cloning to agar in the garage with below freezing temps then huh?

Nope. Use glovebox or flowhood, even if you're working from an igloo on the north pole.

LoL. Yea I have a nice peice of lexan Ive been planning on using for a nice glove box just havent had the time. I was thinking of a material to have in place on the arm holes that would seal around my arm as I enter them. What type of rubber you think would work the best for this application.

Just cut the holes so they're snug on your arms. You don't need an airtight seal. You're just trying to stop the drafts in the room from getting to your sterile work.

uh but isnt the reason hospital surgery rooms are kept cool for sterility? low temperatures may not kill germs but they are not as conducive to them thriving im sure.

Every hopsital operating room I've been in was about 80F. They have a naked patient on the table that would get hypothermia if it was any cooler. They use hepa filters like in our laminar flow hoods to scrub the air.
