Deputies: Weapons Complaint Leads To Marijuana Growing Operation

A father and son are in custody after a weapons complaint led deputies to a huge marijuana growing operation in Cowlitz County, deputies said.

Deputies were called to a home on South Silver Lake Road shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday after a homeowner reported that a woman had come to her door requesting help.

According to the homeowner, the woman said she and 19-year-old Cody Chapman had been before going for a drive in the woods. The woman said Chapman, at some point, fired a handgun at the windshield of their vehicle.

The woman told the homeowner that Chapman stopped the vehicle and fired the handgun several times into the air.
The woman, frightened, said she told Chapman to drive her back to the party, where she took the magazine clip from the gun and fled to the homeowner's residence.

There were no injuries reported in the incident.

Deputies located the truck, which belongs to Chapman's employer in Cathlamet, at Chapman's nearby home on Barba Road, where he resides with his parents.

After gaining permission from Chapman's employer, deputies searched the vehicle. Deputies said they found a .40-caliber Glock handgun, which had been reported stolen out of Vancouver, Wash., in October, and a spent shell casing.

While searching the property for Chapman, deputies said they located a marijuana growing operation in an outbuilding.

Deputies said they obtained a search warrant and located more than 200 marijuana plants in various stages of growth, as well as growth equipment – which were all seized.

Chapman was taken into custody and charged with possession of a stolen firearm and reckless endangerment. He was booked into the Cowlitz County Jail on $20,000 bail.

The homeowner, 42-year-old Matthew Chapman, was arrested and charged with violation of the Controlled Substance Act and was booked in the Cowlitz County Jail on $75,000 bail.
