First grow/casing- couple easy questions

Hey shr00meritez,
Finally got around to casing my substrate today.
Substrate Used: Vermiculite/organic BRF Casing: 50/50 Peat Moss and Vermiculite(no additives) Strain: Cambodian
I use an aluminum tray about 3-4 inches thick, and wrapped it with aluminum foil.
Couple Questions: A) How often can I check to see if the mycelium broke through the casing? B)Will I begin to see a pinset after I put it in the fruiting chamber? When do I transfer it from the incubator to the fruiting chamber?
thanks

Also, am I allowed to mist the casing within that 5 day period? The casing peat/verm looks pretty darn dry.
I just wanted to grow a Cambodian jungle forest, I swear! xD

I would not even check till after 3 days. I would now give the caseing a misting maybe over the corse of a day to get it up to field cap.
When you see it poking through your casing layer in a few spots, move to the fc and fan as much as you can several times a day.

It might take a week to two weeks to develop a pinset after you place it in the fruiting chamber.

I'm going to spew my usual load of blurb that I type up when I see people casing cakes on their own.
Quite a few people have compared the differences in fruiting between dunking and rolling the cakes in moist verm versus crumbling the cakes and casing them, and have found that there is very little if any extra yeild. By crumbling the cakes you:
a) risk more contams b) take longer to get fruits because the mycelium has to repair the damage made by crumbling (if you dunk and roll your cakes, they can start fruiting immediately) c) your mycelium wastes nutrients it could use to fruit because it has to use them to repair that damage.
On the other hand, crumbling to poo, enriched coir or another bulk substrate adds loads of new nutrients, and once the mycelium has colonized all that substrate is can make lots more fruits. http://www.shroomery.org/9735/Should-I-crumble-and-case-my-cakes

Thanks, I'll try coir next time. Got 4 pint jars left.
If 50/50 isn't that much better than dunk and roll, why do people even use it?

Casing helps with humidification, but it isn't necessary with the pf tek because there are easier solutions to that problem (e.g. dunking or pearlite humidification). However, it is more practical to case in larger grows that use bulk substrates because there is generally one large slab of substrate to deal with that is already in the desired shape after it colonizes, not requiring it to be broken apart.

It was done before someone came up with dunk and roll.

Okay, the white fuzz has poked through the casing(looks pretty good). I transferred the tray to a sterilite tub container and currently sterilizing my spray bottle before I load it up with water.
For clarification: From here on out, I should mist the ceiling of the tub(ONLY) for humidity. Fan as much as I can(does it have to be sterilized air?), and give it a couple hours of indirect sunlight per day, correct? Also, does the water for the misting have to be distilled water, or will regular tap water work fine?
Thanks for assisting me in my first grow!

It's okay to mist your casing directly. Use the finest mist setting you have. Mist often, but don't drown your casing. Mist prior to, and following your fanning, which should be often. Regular air is fine. As your casing becomes colonized, it will become more and more resistant to contaminates. 12/12 light is best. Tap water is fine.

thanks, you've been very helpful!
I read somewhere to mist 3 times a day, which makes sense due to humidity/condensation, but I'll take your advice and mist/fan often.
you rock!

You mist depending on the needs of the mycelium. If it's not moist, mist it - but make sure you're not OVER-watering it. Depending on your RH and your humidifying method, it could take more, or it could take less.
Fanning often is a good bet though.
