i just pcd 4 petri dishes with agar solution for 30 mins at 15 psi just like dog food agar tek suggest. After opening i find that all 4 dishes melted and i had agar all over the bottom of my pressure cooker. I want to point out these were not cheap dishes i paid 6 dollars a pop for them the only other thing i could do is order them online and i hate waiting,So do i have to get glass dishes or lower the heat...i was watching it carefully it never went over 15.

i would PC the dish for 10 mins then, keep it somewhere clean. then PC the agar in a jar. then pour agar into the dish in a glove box or somewhere clean. this way you won't melt the dish.

is pressure cooking for 10 minute enough time? it might just reach 15 psi by then. and is the agar still good

I have a qt. sized jar with about... 400ml worth of agar dextrose mixed that has been cooked. It shows absolutely no signs of growth and its been left un-covered, in the light for about a week and a half now. The only cover is a canning lid with 4 holes. Gives off that weird sugary flour smell still
My guess is that.. BUM BUM BUM! its still good. If anything, put that mix in the jar and recook it at 15psi for around 15 - 35 minutes. Once solidified, you can steam bath it to liquid again and then pour in a petri dish thats been alcohol swabbed. If not using spores, you COULD add some H2O2 to the agar mix to make it more stable to contams.

wtf?? You do not reuse platic dishes. They are called disposable for a reason. 6 bucks a pop?? A sucker is born every minute. You should get a whole sleeve for that price.
Stop being cheap, stop with the broke dick dog food agar tech, buy a new sleeve and some real agar.

In addition, you don't sterilize agar in the petri dishes. You sterilize agar in a filtered jar or bottle, and then pour into the dishes when it cools to just above where it solidifies. You don't remove plastic dishes from the sterile sleeve until they're in your glovebox and you're ready to pour. A sleeve of 20 sterile plastic dishes will cost from $4 to $6, depending on where you shop. If they charged six bucks for one, you got ripped.
There's lots of so-called 'teks' written by complete noobs who dream something up and instead of posting "I wonder if this idea would work?", they post it as an actual tek, which then becomes searchable as 'tek' and others get bit in the ass. RR

LOL! I've learned my lesson when it comes to petri dishes. Hell, I won't even buy the cheap flint glass ones anymore. PYREX is the way to go. THEY ARE HELLA EXPENSIVE, but use them once, and you know where the money went. If you look for them at Ebay, you will find that Amazing bargin every once in a while. I once found a dozen 150X15mm Pyrex petri dishes for 20.00.

10 (100x22mm) for $8.25. At less than a dollar each they'll soon overtake plastic cost-wise. They're borosilicate glass, the same stuff "Pyrex" glassware is made out of.
And of course plastic dishes don't go in the autoclave! I don't recommend the autoclavable plastic ones. The PP and ploymethylstyrene ones usually aren't nearly as clear as the normal plastic ones.
