This time it must be contamination? Right?
    #7814887 - 12/30/07 07:18 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I posted before that my cakes had grey marks on them after I picked some mature mushrooms, I was told by several it was spores. I dunked my cake for 15ish hours on the second flush, and today, I noticed a majority of my cake was turning blue and green.

I tossed it. What do you think I did wrong? Maybe I was just being lazy with steralization since all of my cakes thus far have come out great with no contamination, but I thought it was relatively safe to dunk your cake with little risk of contamination.

Any ideas?

It sounds like you might have thrown out a perfectly good cake. Read up on bruising.

Well, is green usually associated with bruising? I think I remember your original post about possible contams, and it most definitely looked like spores.

I know that there is alot of say that if you suspect contamination, get rid of it quick. Well yes if you are absolutly sure.

The best thing to do is if you suspect a contam, then isolate it in its own wee growing chamber, a 2 litre coke bottle with perlite in it, u have probably read the tek, and ask for advise.

Mushroom fruitbodies will bruise, so wil mycelium, i sometimes think my cakes are contamination, but its just bruising, rub cotten bud on the suspect area, bruising wont rub of.Contaminent spores will.

Keep this in mind and ask before you throw away a perfectly healthy cake.

Blue is associated with bruising not green. When in doubt, take a q-tip and rub the coloured patch softly, if the q-tip stains, toss the cake as it will be a sporulating contam. If it doesn't then it is just bruising.

I was off the site for about a year. Now I log on more often I must post about 20 or 30 responses a day myself. Multiply by 30 days and you will see how my post count has got from 500 to 2000 in 3/4 months.
