i have some confusion about misting my brf cakes... i'm about to birth and i am planning to use perlite for humidification, but do i still need to hand spray with a plexiglass barrier in my terrarium? or does perlite tek take the place of handspraying?

it depends how well the perlite keeps the humidity up. If your humidity isn't optimal then yes, you will need to spray. however if the perlite keeps the chamber up in the 90's you should be fine.

it helps to mist occasionally to keep the humidity up..
i dont think it can hurt..
especially if you are fanning your FC... mist before/after to keep humidity up.
plus.. you can mist your cakes after you dunk and roll in verm and let dry to get the verm moist.

what about holes? if i fan, then why do i need to drill holes in my FC? wouldn't that leak too much of the humidity? also... is a plexiglass berrier necessary or can i just spray directly? i read somewhere that the large water droplets could damage the delicate mycelium network.

the holes are drilled in the fc to aid your frequent air exchanges, and it also helps pull air through the perlite to keep your humidity up.
when you mist your cakes spray the mist up into the air and let it rain back down onto your cakes.
i dont understand what you mean by a plexi-glass barrier. do you mean the lid?

You'll still want to mist as required, and don't worry about the drip shield. They're old-tek and not necessary. RR

thank you for the input. i've finally had some time to actually do some research instead of asking so many questions. i'm a student and have a family so i had not had much time to actually LOOK for the answers that were already out there...
by the way RR, i was curious as to whether you grow other things like different plant species or flowers. you seem to have a love for living inanimates.

Measure the humidity with a humidity gauge if you're unsure about it. Cakes need a high humidity (95-100%). I also mist them to keep the humidity high. BTW, don't forget to dunk and roll them after birthing!
