Seasonal Affective Disorder is a bitch. I know im happy and yada yada yada.... but I keep on getting these damn depressed thoughts throughout the winter. I think its usually around christmas time and through a good portion of January, but it usually subsides near the end of Jan.
Does anyone have any advice in combating SAD?
Thanks in advance.

In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. Sunlight and socialization. I live where winter is six months long and very cold and the whole population seems to get this passing melancholy ever year. Spend more time with other people, it seems to help. In the summer it's easier to socialize, and then we go into withdrawal when it's cold and everyone stays inside.

I get pretty depressed when winter rolls around, i believe doctors actually recgonize it as a problem with people. Forget the name they call it some kinda winter depression.

This year's the first in many that i haven't noticed SAD.
My sleeping pattern is usually the first thing to go, once that spirals out of control i'm lucky to see any sunlight which makes things even worse.
One different thing about this year is the amphetamine i've been using (usually one session a week). As strange as it sounds it has given me some control over my sleeping pattern, or at least created a pattern that allows me plenty of sunlight even if sleep is sometimes sacrificed.
I DON'T advise using amphetamines but it's pretty clear being up early for sunrise and getting as much sun as the day has to offer makes a big difference. I have been using 5-htp, multi-vits and medicinal () doses of chocolate to help combat negative effects from the speed which may have also helped with the SAD.

I find it funny that they went out of their way to give it the acronym SAD instead of calling it "Winter depression" or something. I think it even more hilarious that people think they are somehow genetically predisposed to enjoying life less in the winter.

SAD as in the "Standard American Diet" is worth a giggle too.

Genetically predisposed? You mean, by being human? The relationship between serotonin levels and mood is well-established, and research has indicated that Vitamin D3 levels in the blood are related to the production of serotonin.

Im not debating that either way... i was merely making a comment about the phrase "I have SAD".... as if it is like a cold you caught.

Yes, it would be more accurate to say "I'm extra-sensitive to the seasonal fluctuations of my natural serotonin levels."
I think that a combination of Vitamin D supplementation, refraining from irrational negative thoughts, vigorous daily exercise (pref. outdoors), engaging in enjoyable activities & consuming a health-promoting diet is the best "cure" for both seasonal AND year-round/occasional depression.
