Recession Ahead?

http://www.forbes.com/home/opinions/2007/12/26/croesus-chronicles-recession-oped-cz_rl_1227croesus.html?partner=yahoofp
if it's true, what should i do? should i stock up on food and medicine?
i keep hearing that we are going to enter one and then i hear that we are not. im beginning to think that we are going to enter one. i've been saving my money and im beginning to think that it's all going to be a waste.
what happens in a recession? how fast does it hit? what things could a person do to prepare for one?

is that what i should do, buy a gun? i have a .22 with a scope, several banana clips, and a reloader for the clips...but it's only a .22...
a new car would be worthless i guess...with no gas.
would prices go up or down in a recession?
what kind of things should a person stock up on?

I think you're overreacting.
Yes, the economy is fucked, but I don't think you'll need a gun for anything unless you live in a bad neighborhood.

jesus people - it's an economic recession, not anarchy.
all it means is that everyone will have less money (essentially). business will slow as people tighten up their budgets to "brace" for the recession. essentially, people's preparations for a recession aids in leading to one. its the self-fulfilling prophecy.

sorry, i missed this post.
so it's basically when the economy slows down and a bunch of people lose their jobs meaning that they have less money to contribute to the economy, resulting in it getting worse?
are prices more likely to go up or down? that page said that either could happen. if they went down, would it be wise to buy a bunch of silver so that when the thing ends i can cash in?

essentially, yes. you not spending money puts less money into business you would usually consume at. those businesses decline in profits may/may not lead to layoffs. layoffs means whoever is laid off takes a SERIOUS cut in family income, leading to a drastic decrease in consumption on their part. In your case, you're saving your money, in the bank - which is good - that way the bank can lend it out, but its irrelevant because nobody wants to borrow on credit since times are "tight".
recessions suck - let's hope the FED comes up with something to make it all disappear!
i love monetary/fiscal policy - its my favorite area of economics (my major)

tight times are the best to invest, if you have the income to do so (hence, tight times).
basically, if nobody cared about the looming recession, and continued to spend frivolously on shit they dont need and cant afford - we probably wouldn't have one.
thats the reason stock markets crash - people freaking out.

if this all does happen, could it be just as bad as the great depression?
back then, didn't the banks refuse to give people their own money because they didn't have it or something? and didn't people kill themselves? weren't people selling nice cars for really cheap?

while I'm sure there are compelling reasons why they think a recession may be in store... the media has been crying wolf about economic recessions since before many of us here were born. It's a very attention-grabbing headline and if they keep feeding people scraps of information about the impending doom on the horizon, people are going to keep tuning in/reading/etc. thinking that the info will help them somehow, which of course is fine with the media companies and their advertisers.

Yeah, but now most banks are insured by the government so if they fail you can get up to something like 10,000 or 100,000, I forgot how big it goes.
