Lipstick mold, safe to fruit?
    #781438 - 07/28/02 06:39 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Have a few jars about 50-75% colonized and have noticed in two of the jars what appears to be patches of lipstick mold. The mycelium seems to be killing it off, or at least overgrowing it, as the contam is not growing in size anymore.

Is lipstick mold dangerous to humans? If I allow the jars to fully colonize and the mycelium manages to destroy the mold, will the cakes me OK for fruiting? Or should I just destroy the jars now and get it over with?

Im not too sure if lipstick mold is harmfull to the mycelia or to humans because it is fairly rare but i wouldnt eat the fruits off that thing. Let it colonize 100% and wait 2 more weeks once it looks colonized. That way if any mold is still alive inside the cake the mycelium will destroy it (hopefully).

Again its your choice, your risk!

Be safe, take care

Is getting high worth the risk?

No, it's not worth the risk as long as I'm unsure if the mold is dangerous or not. That's why I asked :-)

My point was, don't risk your health. Throw it out when in doubt.

If indeed it is a strain of "lipstick mold", trow it out. There are a few species that are toxic to humans and mammals. From TMC "Geotrichum candidum causes an oral, bronchial, pulmonary, and/or intestinal disease known as Geotrichosis that infects humans and other mammals"

That doesn't sound like much fun. You can always grow more.

Alright, well would spore prints taken from mushrooms that have grown on a previously contaminated cake be ok to use?

I have experimented with spores from contaminated casings(not lipstick) and have had every jar experience contams.
