Steaming And proper sterilization?

Since my first failure at the pftek. Im going to try and do it right this time. So i dont have a pressure cooker. but i do have a semi good pot. I think veda said that you ccan use tin foil to elevate it from the bottom. but how would i do that. Without the jars flippin over? I cant use jar lids since i need the jar lids. im going to boil them for about 2 hours. Is that enough time? Or is that too much? Also when the 2hours is up. what should i do? take the pot over the stove and leave it sit over night then it would be good for inoculation? ALso how many spore syringes Do you guys think i should get for 18 jars? And wheere i think i screwed up before in my glove box. Should i put all my items in my glove box then spray lysol or should i spray before i put the items in the box. thanks

Just buy some extra jars? Mason jars aren't exactly expensive.
2 hours should be fine. Just let them sit over night to insure the insides have cooled down. You don't want to go killing your spores.
I'd say two syringes. Plenty for 18 jars and a little left over to make an LC.

There's a good guide around here somewhere that doesn't require a PC. You only really need a PC for grains because of endospores(correct me if I'm wrong) which might survive simple heat.
You're just disinfecting water and honey in this case. I think the tek is called LC for beginners or something? Just requires a pot. And if it works, LC is the greatest investment you'll ever make.

The same way you'd normally sterilze them? I highly suggest looking up the tek.
An LC is generally done 1-2 weeks after you inject it. It will provide you with enough material to shoot up dozens of jars, that will colonize faster than if you were just using spores.
Oh, you also don't need to buy new spore syringes. Saves you money.

To sterilize syringes;
1) Boil a sauce pan of water. 2) While waiting for that to boil, I put some rubbing alch. in a small cup, and suck it up into the syringe, and flush it back into the cup a couple of times. 3) Once the water is boiling, i remove it from the heat, and suck the water into the syringe and flush it out 5 times. 4) Leave the plunger down after the last flush. 5) Rubbing alch. the needle one last time and put the sleeve on.
Poof, sterile syringe.
/ma
EDIT: I like LC's

I actually skip the water boiling stage lately, and just suck up alcohol a few times and then let it sit for a bit before shooting it out and using it. I've yet to have any problems with it at all.
That being said, your method is no doubt the proper one. :p

When was the last time you picked up a cup of coffee when the cup was cool, but the coffee inside was still hot? A 1/2 pint jar is even smaller than a cup of coffee, so how is that possible? If the jar is cool to the touch, the insides are cool enough for inoculation. RR

Actually pretty often, seeing as I work at a coffee shop. You'd be surprised what happens there! Not to mention 105F is pretty cool for us.
Not to argue, as I know I'll just get my ass handed to me, but over night can't hurt? :p

My gut tells me leaving the jars overnight increases a chance for contam exposure, specially since he's also not using a PC. When I'm done with a PC, I usually just turn off the stove and leave it alone for 5 hours while it does it's thing and then inoculate.

I think i fucked up in my glove box. I had bought presterilized jars. I will never do that again. A stupid mistake. I thoguht it would be impossible to find jars. But all i had to do was walk down the street. Just pure laziness. Ill never be like that again. Well at least when it comes to mushroom growing.

What size cups of coffee do you drink, RR? But then you drink that watery stuff in the US...
Oh, for 1/2 cakes put something in the bottom, be it pebbles, a dishcloth, crumpled up foil, whatever, add enough water so that it just touches the bottom half inch of the jar at most and start to boil. Once the water is boiling, lower the flame so it stays boiling but not too hard and let boil for 90 minutes, covered of course. Then or let them cool in the pot or anywhere else overnight to be safe (the foil will protect the holes), and inoculate.

Its best to leave the jars in the pot cooling overnight, once cool transfer to you glovebox to be inoculated
So i would sterilise your first half let cool then inoc, then do the rest of the jars, its only going to seperate them by a day maybe 2.

It's fine. There is foil on the tops after all. Just take them out using a cloth (they will be v hot) and place them somewhere that won't get damaged by the heat (and that isn't too cold or the glass might crack).

I just remembered that i think it was RR mentioned using perlite on the bottom of the pot to get the jars of the bottom???
Jar lids work best if you have lots of spares, you can buy them pretty cheap.
The couple times i steam sterilised i used a cloth on the bottom of the pot.

I have used successfully:
Dishcloth, pebbles from the street (they put them around trees in my neighbourhood), wrinkled up foil, hydroton.

you should boil them first to kill the contaminated stuff, before you open the jars ,its not healthy to breath that shit in,then after you dump them outside you could soak the jars an lids in bleach for a hour then wash with dish soap.good luck with everything .
