What's The Most Amazing Software You Currently Use?

VMWare - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VmwareVMWare
There's a version for both Windows and Linux and there are torrents everywhere.
I currently have Windows XP running in a virtual machine launched from Debian Linux which in turn is launched from Windows XP running natively on the real CPU.
The emulation is almost perfect. Just start it up with the Windows or Linux install disk in the drive (or an image mapped) and it will up and install a virtual machine just like that. I think it's pretty impressive.

For any Windows person who wants to play around with Linux without committing, WMWare is perfect. Just install your favorite flavor of Linux in a virtual machine that almost perfectly emulates real hardware.

I agree with you. If you want to play around without committing it really is amazing. It's all stored in one big file and it's perfectly contained and functional.

The Open Office suite.
It is a free word processing/office suite that absolutely blows MS Office out of the water, and a lot of auxilliary programs as well.
It has MAD FEATURES. I'm an absolute diehard fan of it. None of the MS Word crap, I don't even use that shit anymore.
You can save $1.000 on software and STILL have more features, in one integrated package.
And free! Open Office rules! Not convinced?
Take the free tour!
Writing, Drawing, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Information
Free. Way to go Sun Microsystems!

God knows I hate M$, but nothing compares to M$ Excel. Especially nothing in Open Office. I'm pretty sure Excel is what keeps M$ on top of the whole office productivity arena. Also, M$ Office apps play very well with each other and other M$ products like Exchange and Portal.
Goddamn, I cannot believe I just said something good about M$ products.
The most amazing software I use is XBMC and ccxstream. XBMC_PC + ssh + ccxstream = t3h shiznit.

I've been using Ableton Live more and more recently. Everything about it is unique, from the GUI to how audio is processed. The learning curve was pretty hard for me coming from more traditional DAW's, but the more I use this fucking program the more I fall in love with it.

As much as I hate to say it, Office 2007 is actually pretty fucking sweet.
The new gui actually makes it easier to use, and seeing as I've had to write a shit ton of scientific papers recently for college its certainly made my life more productive. I particularly like the equation builder. It was probably around in older versions of word, but 2007's gui makes it all easier to find.
As much as I'm a linux zealot, I must congratulate microsoft on this one. Office 2007 kicks the shit out of OOo 2.3.

SuperCopier is a simple background program that takes over the windows XP move/copy window.
It shows the transfer speed, better ETA, you can pause, limit speeds and see a list. All things windows should have build in.

It takes up 3mb ram and no cpu when idle and works flawless for me.

well im not sure if this is exactly what this thread is about but i did figure this out this past fall.
utorrent + 'rss feeds from tvtorrent upload sites' = turning your cpu basically into a tivo
www.eztv.it is a site that hosts torrents of tv shows. It also makes use of rss feeds, which basically allow you to know exactly when a torrent has been uploaded. If you set up utorrent to look for the rss feeds of your favorite shows, they will automatically start downloading, as soon as they find the rss.
RSS tutorial @ Google

its real easy to set up, but due to the current writers strike, there are not too many new episodes being released

I just got windows mobile on a smartphone so a little program called "pocket informant" has my scheduling and calendar completely customized.
Once google maps enables "my location" on my device I'll have a form of GPS in my pocket and find the nearest pizza place, gasstation etc. I'm sure that will take the cake then.

Already listen ableton...
But recently I've been using Yamipod based on a post on this forum to xfer music to my ipod. The executable is pretty small, and ipods are recognized as mass storage devices, so keeping a copy of the executable works out great for when I take it to a friends house, or somewhere i may not have an internet connection. No need for itunes, just the ipod.
Not so amazing, but very convinient

It allows you to create a virtual drive letter that is encrypted with strong encryption. In the Windows explorer, the drive letter looks and acts exactly like an ordinary drive, but under the covers, the data is inaccessible without the key.
I use it to protect sensitive information. If I'm ever raided and they take my computers, they'll never be able to see what's on those virtual drive letters.
If you share a computer with someone, you can set up P: for example (I use P: for Protected) and none of the other people sharing the machine can access that data without your key (password).
The new version about to be released can encrypt an entire partition, including the OS partition. When you start up the OS, you're first asked for your TrueCrypt key, then the OS can boot up. Without that key, even moving the disk to a forensic analysis system you will be unable to see even the OS files.
And fortunately, according to this precedent-setting legal case, I can't be compelled to turn over my encryption key. It amounts to self-incrimination, which is protected by the Bill of Rights (for the time being).
Even without that important case, I would summarily refuse to cooperate. I might go to prison for contempt, but revealing my key would get me locked up for a lot longer.
So yeah, TrueCrypt rocks, and it's free and open source!

Yep. Real encryption isn't like on Star Trek where they find an encrypted database and Worf says: "Oh, it's encrypted. Lemme just break it here... one second".
Real encryption is unbreakable in the lifetime of the universe.
Note: all this may change when/if practical quantum computers are invented.
