Course they do, one kidney's doing twice as much work so it will get worn out quicker.

Not actually. The remaining kidney will grow large enough to compensate for the other one.

I've heard both theory's before but I don't know which is true. 
I've also heard that the "extra" kidney is left over from evolution, back in the caveman days our diet was different and we needed the "extra" kidney, but now modern man can do without (like wisdom teeth)

There's probably a good reason for having two. I always imagined they could do load balancing, so if one is not tip top, the other can do more work.
Why couldn't we have multiple hearts?

Cause we reproduce our cells all the time.. ..it could be just a waste of nutrients to have more than one. And we probably never had the use for more than one.
