Do I have to start running to continue to lose weight?

i've been eating extremely healthy lately, almost no candy, no fast food, only healthy foods. i've also been active. i went from like 175-180 down to 165 over a couple of months.
if i want to continue to loose weight and slim up, will i have to start doing more vigorous workouts, like running?

Running is good but it isnt needed. Stay eating healthy and active, maybe lift a little weights, play some sports or something with friends. That should be enough to keep you slim.

I would love to be 165 lbs. Why would you want to get any lighter than that?

because i still have a little bit of fat in my stomach and the area right above the hips, next to the stomach.
im 5' 11". i use to be really skinny when i was a little kid, but then my parents bought me a nintendo 64 and i gained weight. i've never really been fat or chubby, i've just had a little bit of extra weight on me. i've always said that im going to lose it, i try, but give up...now that i have quit smoking, i figure that i can run without my lungs killing me.
it's all a personal thing. not even an image thing. i liked how i used to fell back in the old days.

Vigorous cardio is an excellent way to burn extra calories & slim down. Interval workouts were effective for me, and they are a good way to build endurance, as well. I did a 3 min walk/1 min run cycle for 20-30 mins. per day, but you could do intervals on a bike or swimming or ??
Additionally, building muscle raises your metabolic rate, so you will burn extra calories 24/7. I did a split routine (upper body/lower body) 6 days a week to lose weight & build lean muscle mass. Once you are at your goal weight, you can cut it to 3 days (full body) for maintenance.

I'm glad you are eating healthier! you will thank yourself when all your fast food freinds feel like shit all the time.
i have been cooking healthy and lost some extra pounds. my intention was just to eat better foods so i'd feel better and have more energy.
Diet Goals -eat lower on the food chain to reduce food miles (pollution related to transportating food) -reduce toxin burden from preservatives, radiatives, animal hormones -eat wide variety of grains and plants and stuff... lots of nutrients, gotta get as many as you can! -learn how to cook
my hair and skin have become much healthier as well!
during the summer i grow alot of vegitables and once youve had homegrown foods you see them in a whole new way.

Plus if you run, you gain endurance. And when you gain endurance you gain the ability to outrun people who want to arrest you.

no worries about taking it slow at first. once you feel out your endurance and speed, you will know where your body's limits are, and when to push them.
take it step by step, but go higher each day.

Running helps so much. I run 2 mi. on a treadmill every other day with inclines. This will keep you in shape and feeling great. The only other exercises I do are sit ups and push ups, a variety of stretches, and my 1.5hr drum practice.
I'm 6'3" 165lbs.

i'm 5'9", i gained a lot of weight freshman year (also started smoking that year). I got up to like 175 from 145, and didnt like it.
finally after forever, i got a bike trainer so i could ride indoors, i rode for an hour a day, in two blocks of 30min separated by a little weight-lifting inbetween the two sets. I ate only lunchmeat sandwitches on wheat and took vitamens & shit.
6 weeks later, i was down 30lb. Perhaps a little more drastic than necessary but it felt great.
Once i was down to minimal body fat, ive been eating right and working out ever since, and i'm up to 160 with only minimal fat gains.

alright, im at 160 now...sometimes im like 157 and sometimes im like 162....my license says that im 5' 11" but i think that im really 5' 10".
i've been walking for 10 minutes, then jogging non-stop for 40 minutes, then walking for 10-40 minutes. and on my days off(3 a week) i walk for an additional 60 minutes.
my target goal weight is 150.
with this kind of exercise routine and a low calorie diet, how long should it take to achieve that goal?

Try running as hard as you can for about 20 minutes. I am talking as fast you can possibly sustain the entire time. Maybe mix it up with some sprints, hills, and stuff. Make it fun and be careful. If you're going to lift weights after you get down to the body fat percentage that you want, read this post. http://messageboard.tuckermax.com/showthread.php?t=15685

I would go for fast/power walking over running...running is hard on your joints and u get tired fast(in comparison to walking) so your actually getting more accomplished far as I know
I know thats mainly how I lost all the weight(from 250-177 atm) I lift weights and do cardio at the gym as well now
eating good is not enough to get into really good shape(I'm talking like defined muscles/abs etc)

despite what anyone tells you, yes you have to include a cardio workout if you want to develope your abdominals. it also depends on how fat you are. but if you want a six pack you have to run as well as start a strenuous stomach exercise. anyone who tells you different is lying or doesnt know what they are talking about.

A swimming workout can be a new and refreshing way to get or stay in shape. Swimming is a full body aerobic sport that tones muscles, improves strength and flexibility, increases circulation, controls weight and enhances body contours.
Swimming workouts give you a low impact activity that can easily be tailored to match your abilities. A good way to gain cardiovascular stamina is to exercise in a swimming pool.
The secret to a good swimming exercise program is to work with the water. To accomplish this, propel yourself through the water by using your abs, hips and shoulders.
To understand why water exercise works so well, you need to know about water's unique properties. In water, your body has almost no gravity. You're relieved of 90% of your body weight so you become very buoyant.
You can float, bob and relax without feeling like you're putting out any effort. Yet water provides 12 to 14 percent more resistance than air, so as you move through it, it's like having weights around you.
Swimming laps is great exercise in a swimming pool. Try different strokes to vary the muscles you work to keep your workout balanced.
Going vertical or upright is another very effective exercise in water. These types of water workouts include water walking, jogging, water aerobics, water toning, water therapy, water yoga and water flexibility training.
You can strengthen your muscles with these vertical water workouts because you experience 75% greater resistance than swimming horizontally. This vertical position maximizes the resistance of water against your movements.
Water based activities can provide significant benefits for older adults too. In addition to increasing metabolism, physical activity can improve cardiovascular health and increase strength, not to mention the psychological and social benefits as well.
Joining an aquatics class or just sharing a swimming workout with a friend can help you feel better about yourself. You can be more socially active, engage in community activities and tend to not lose your independence because you are more physically fit.
The bottom line is to choose activities that you enjoy and will stick with. It is never too late to introduce physical activity into your life. Swimming workouts can provide a healthy and enjoyable way to get back the fun you use to have as a child.

i wish i was 160-170...
i'm 6' and 140lb's
worked out for like 3-4 hours a day; bag work, running, weightless resistance training(google zen weightless workout - it's good stuff) ate 4-5 meals a day for 3 months and i didn't gain an ounce
i didn't expect much, just hoped for maybe 5 pounds
i suppose maybe a few years of that kinda training and i'll get something... i just don't know what's wrong... maybe low testosterone?

if i want to continue to loose weight and slim up, will i have to start doing more vigorous workouts, like running?
well first let me congratulate you for the progress youve made so far. its a big step to do what youve done.
to answer your question, you dont HAVE to exercise, however it is beneficial, and will speed up your progress ALOT. with a healthy diet and at least stretching and walking regularly every day, your body will regulate and return to normal size and function all on its own. exercise is a must though in my opinion.
running is great exercise. even just a mile every other day is great. i personally run about 2-3 miles a day.

im weighing in at 155 now, although i was 154 this morning. it tends to go back and forth by about 3-4 pounds depending on what i eat.
when i weigh myself, im naked, am i suppose to wear cloths when i weigh myself?
i've noticed that in the areas that i lost fat, the skin is a bit saggy, not to bad though, how long will it take for the skin to tighten up? i was 180 once and that's the heaviest i've been.
i read that it can boast my metabolism if i intake a lot of calories once a week. when i do this, what kind of foods should it be?

To increase your metabolism, you need to eat more regularly.
6 small meals is way better than 3 larger meals. Also excercise, even just walking for 45 mins upon waking will kickstart the days metabolism.
Don't skip meals. Healthy regular small meals are key.
Green leafy vege's like brocolli and spinich are called negative calories. Your body uses more calories digesting them, than is retrieved from them (but you can't live on them).

I didn't read the thread, but running has changed my life. I am up to 4 miles a day and would like to push even further. You really get to some trippy places in your mind through running for extended periods of time.

Well, estimate your mile pace. If you were jogging kinda slow, you mightve been around 10 min/mile....so prob around 4 miles in 40 minutes. Prob more/less depending on if you walked part of it or went faster.
go here and mark out your route: gmap pedometer It also has a function to show you hills/elevation changes.
I ran for many many years, but had to stop cause its just sooo hard on the body. My knees were just gettin worse and worse. I recommend cycling instead. Save up a lot and do some research. Get a decent entry-level road bike for about $700 or less and start cycling. Most likely there are cycling groups/clubs in your area (theyre everywhere), so see if you can get on some group rides. Theyll make you go farther while being able to draft them.
And that is very important.
See, to burn fat you dont need high intensity, short-lived workouts where your heartrate jumps up to like 160 or more for 20 minutes. You need looooong drawn out cardio with your heartrate around 120bpm. And its very easy to bike for hours. Especially once you get in shape for cycling. Most beginner and average cyclists go for rides around 20-30 miles which is like 2 hours of cardio...and those 2 hours required like the same effort as your 40 minute run.
I used to commute to work on an old mountain bike that i had that i upgraded a bit with skinnier tires and better gearing. The ride was about 10-11 miles each way and i would time myself trying to go faster every day. By the end of summer (i started in may) my body fat was sooo low that i had veins in my quads.
As for diet...just try eating less bread and other simple carbohydrates. Get a chicken sandwich without the bun.etc. Eat more protein and veggies.

For me that would be just under 4 miles, for you, maybe more. I do 4 miles right now (4.3 yesterday) but am slowly pushing myself up to five. I would ideally do five miles a day. Six or more when I get really spicy for running...that is a satisfying goal for the future.
Hey, check out the "couch to 5k" running plan on google. It helped me get started. I used to have to break up my running with walking, but now I can jog continuously at a quick pace for about 43 minutes. Today I'll make it 45.
