Pics from afternoon foray- Northern California
    #7809217 - 12/28/07 11:39 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

The conditions in Northern California have been quite nice for edibles and all sorts of other mushies, a welcome change from the cold weather in Seattle.

A recent hike up around the North Bay was quite successful. I've never really enjoyed scouring acres of woodchips for active varieties (though I would love to "stumble" upon some), so I chose a nice coastal forest mix of conifer and oak for some edibles. The big find were yellow Chanterelles, as well as some candy caps. Pics:

Chicken of the Woods I believe (smelled pretty bad, don't see how it could taste any better):

Death Cap I believe:

Unknown Amanitas:

Another Amanitas:

mmmmmm....

Was too hasty to take pics of the Chanterelles before I picked them, about a 1 1/2 pounds in all:

An immature Elven Saddle I think:

The following are a few pics I took of specimens I couldn't identify for the life of me. Poor lighting, sorry.

The last two are of the same mushrooms. They have very white stems, very much like cyans, but bruise a pale orange/yellow instead of blue.

And a nice setting sun to end the day:

Hope everyone's having a nice holiday season. Here's to eggnog! mmmm...

-BB

ps. I used this recipe for the chanterelles, AMAZING HOLY CRAP MY PANTS GOOD. http://www.somamushrooms.org/cooking/recipe_chanterelleleeks.html

The last Amanita looks like it could be a Western Grisette.

Yeah I think you're right, ain't it beautiful?  Much more so when you stumble upon them in the wild.  Such perfect symmetry and patterning.....yeah I'm gonna go get high now.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus.
All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter, while the
octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV.
But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns.
Also he got a race car.
Is any of this getting through to you?

Nice pics. The "chicken of the wood" arn't actually the real laetiporous sulphereus, which don't have gills like the ones in your pics, rather pores, as they are members of the polypore family. Not sure what those are. Nice chanterelles though, and nice hunting partner!!!

That's no chicken of the woods. I hope you didn't eat that.

Thanks for the feedback. No I didn't eat that yellow mushroom, I was really just guessing with my ID of it. Any idea what the unknown Amanitas is, or those last 3 pics?

Oh yeah, that not me with the mushroom, tis my little sister. Alas I am the one holding the camera, and I'm not quite as attractive (hairy chest, goatee). Har har har.
