My New Year's Resolution 1
#7810934 - 12/29/07 04:10 PM (16 years, 1 month ago) |
|
|
I always hated these "I'm leaving" threads, but I figured I owe it to people here who might wonder what happened to me. I'm at a point in my life where I feel like I need to get my shit together. It seems like the Shroomery is too big a distraction for me to take care of the things I want to accomplish. So, it's with some sadness but firm determination that I announce my New Year's Resolution to leave the Shroomery for an entire year. I'll have two more days to mess around on here, and then I'll see you guys again in 2009(assuming I don't cave in on this).

Wow, good luck! I would have to disable my internet for that to work for me. Everything in moderation, even the Shroomery.
Which reminds me; I've been on here wayyy too much lately.

Getting my life together, making money, reading, writing, socializing. I remember NYE 2004 when I took a month off of the Shroomery. At the time I was in college and pretty much had no friends outside of the Shroomery. During that month, I met a bunch of cool people, and suddenly had a social life. If a month could do that for me, I'd like to see what a year can do.

i took like 2-3 years off of the shroomery once. just like you said you were in 04, i had no friends, no life, and all i did was mess around on the shroomery and cause problems, lol.
i didn't choose to leave however, my mom kicked me out of her house and baam!...i had friends, a party life, a new girlfriend(dysfunctional however), a new job, a new car, a whole new me.
but since then, i've somehow faded back into my little crawl space of a loner life. im ready to go back to living though...i quit smoking(pretty sure for good), dont really smoke weed anymore, and im actually loosing that little bit of weight that i've been saying im going to lose for the last couple of years.
good luck on your resolution.

Good luck man! I'm probably gonna take a break fairly soon considering my GPA suffered mainly because of this damn site! Even though I'm new to the shroomery my life has been going downhill pretty much. I need to get my shit together as well, wish me luck! And good luck to all y'all fellow shroomerites! As they say, once a shroomerite always a shroomerite(Or at least I say that)!!!!

honestly, I think by placing such a long time frame for self-banment you are setting yourself up for failure.

I'm talking about the all or nothing approach, ignoring moderation. By completely avoiding it you cast it as a negative in itself that is the root of your current problems. In reality, the real root is yourself and such character flaws. Work on those and those alone, Shroomery has nothing to do with them. If you work on improving yourself, completely leaving the Shroomery is not necessary, since moderation will surely follow.
The Shroomery isn't your problem. You are your problem.

I used to think the same way as you, Silversoul, but spud really is right. It's a question of focus, intention, mental fortitude, will. It's just way too easy to put a big chunk of the blame on the Shroomery.

It's not the Shroomery I'm blaming. It's my addiction to it. With it out of my way, I can focus on the other things that getting in my way.

Focus on other things by actually ignoring the issue. You'd do way better to teach yourself visiting a place you like in moderation than to simply cut it out of your life completely. You're not really learning anything that way - all you're learning to do is fill a void. Not balance.

The addiction reveals and underlying character problem. It should not be ignored, rather addressed, since it appears to be greatly related to the problematic nature of weakness of the will. Unless approached, it will effect other areas of your life too.

Whatever. Look, I need this. I've thought it over for a while now, and for several reasons, I think this would be best for me. The Shroomery isn't my only distraction, but it's my primary one, and without it to fill my time, I'll be forced to do other things, particularly more productive things. This has been my past experience when taking a hiatus from the Shroomery, and I know it will work again.

So this has all happened before then? And you'll be back again, hooked again. And then you'll need a break again. Wouldn't it be nice to break the cycle by doing the hardest thing of all? Coming here less instead of not at all?

Yes, I'll eventually start posting regularly again, after having accomplished things which by then will have made my life more enriched, so that posting so much will not be as much of a problem. I'm not going to arguing about this. My mind is made up. I'm just making this thread to say goodbye to people who I won't be seeing for quite some time, and I'm not in the mood to argue.

Take the year off if you think it would help you. You don't need to convince anyone else it's a good idea.

good luck man. I'll miss you around here. I tried to take a year off once. I think me, and 40 did it together and made it about a month.
I don't care what anyone says this place can be a horrible addiction for a lot of people. Moderation would be great, but some people have a hard time practicing it. A lot of the admins seem uniformely against granting bans in these situations, but there are mods who are sympathetic, and will ban you for a period of time if you feel you need it.

I'll ban you for 365 days if you want.
I find it hard to take your so-called resolution seriously however. My first thought when I read the first post was 'See you on Jan 2!'. If you make the obligatory Goodbye Thread, you are doomed to return in mere days.
So anyways, like I said... I will ban you if you really want, but I think that you and I and most people already know that isn't what you really want.
Good luck.
