What pH are you looking for, some health waters have increased pH.
The testers are cheap.
Lime is more of an acid, you might need something to lower the acidity?

It will depend on the initial pH . You need to find that out.

You can get ph test strips for like 2.50 and you can get drops for a few bucks more, digital sucks anyways.

How about skipping it? Blue doesn't seem to think it will be much of a problem. I am almost to where you are now at, and have been wondering the same things.. On your failed grow did your casing contaminate?

Anyone have an opinion?
The powdered calcium carbonate won't correct the pH fast enough. Use lime

Synth43 said: It brought a cup of water up to pH 8 instantly. Will it not have the same effect in the soil? I can powder it enough to be water soluble.
The instant pH is not what you're after. It's the pH after it's had time to settle. You'll want to check it after it's had time to react with whatever acids are in the mixture. Otherwise, all you're doing is measuring the pH of the calcium carbonate.

Hydrated lime is alkaline, not acidic.
