Hydrating MGMC for casing.
    #7809628 - 12/29/07 02:35 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

How much water should be used? As much as the Miracle Gro will hold?

Also, any recommendations on length of sterilization?

you want to pasteurize, not sterilize. sterilizing does not provide any advantage because it makes the casing layer an equal playing field for contams to get ahold of.

and you want to hydrate it to field capacity.

Both sterilizing and pasteurization have their good and bad points but as far as the question at hand as far as how much water to hydrate with I have seen people here hydrate to field capacity before pressure cooking and after.I always PC it the way it comes out of the bag and than mist it after. It makes it ALLOT easier to put on when its dry, don't give a second thought as to the water not being clean as by the time you are applying moisture control your "casing" should be plenty resilient to contamination:thumbup:

I've heard of people sterilizing with plenty of success. As far as I can tell, pasteurization may leave some good bacteria but could leave some bad as well. They both seem like they have their ups and downs.

It's a casing, and so, he can sterilize.

Pasteurizing in necessary for bulk substrates but a casing layer should be non nutritive and pH adjusted to be unfriendly to contams and so sterilizing will do as good a job.

if there was no disadvantage to sterilizing, don't you think everyone would do it? pasteurizing is a pain in the ass.

by pasteurizing something you kill all of the bad mold and bacteria spores while leaving the beneficial ones which promote a healthy growth of your substrate. sterilizing kills everything and leaves your substrate without any defense, so if a contam DOES land on it, it will contam. if you are hoping for repeated flushes then the chances of a sterilized casing not becoming contaminated decreases drastically as more time passes. sure, you may able to sterilize the casing and get away with it, but sooner or later it's going to bite you in the ass. besides, pasteurizing isn't that difficult anyways. someone linked 2 teks that tell you how to pasteurize in jars on your stove.

bottom line is: you want to pasteurize.
