How can I rehydate my colonizing cake?
    #7808295 - 12/28/07 06:58 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Hi, my 1 pint cake is colonizing very slow, and I have noticed that it might be a little bit dry. On two points of the jar where I injected the spores the mycelium is growing very slowly toward the bottom, but on the other two points it has almost reached the bottom of the jar. I was wondering if its okay to dunk a cake that isn't finished colonizing? Can I dunk the entire jar into water or should I let the water only reach the sides where colonization is slower?

Patience. Remember, you agreed to wait much longer when you selected 1 pint jars over the more suitable and recommended 1/2 pints. I'd suggest next time using 1/2 pints and simply make twice as many if you desire more product.

If your substrate moisture content was right to begin with, it still is. Pint jars simply take longer.

At the time my only option was a 1 pint jar so unfortunately I became stuck with it. But when I examined my jar, the two points where the mycelium is growing the slowest look like they are dry, compared to the other two spots which look a lot more moist. I made sure to add the right amount of water to the substrate when I started out (I just doubled the amount that 1/2 pints called for), but that was a little bit over a month ago, so they may have lost some moisture since then. So I'm assuming that dunking the cakes at this point would harm them? Also, can you tell me what WBS is?

wbs is an acronym for wild bird seed, but at the point you are now you don't need to be worrying about that. while your pint colonizes you should get some 1/2 pint jars and make up another batch. like RR said, pints take longer to colonize simply because they're bigger. just because it's been over a month now doesn't necessarily mean that it's dry. only time will tell.

good luck.

Thanks, yeah I probably will do 2 half-pints while I wait for this one to finish. I'll try the wbs method as well. Much appreciated

U cant take the substrate out the jar before full colinisation, any uncolinsed substrate would grow mould or bacteria. U can only take it out once u have full colinisation, once the mycelium has a foothold on the substrate, contaminations cant get a hold on it.

Its very comen for pf tek pints to take very long to colinise and stall.

There have been successfull 1 pint grows, it would be much easier to just use twice as much 1/2 pints.
