What a difference an incubator makes!
    #780748 - 07/27/02 07:12 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Hey just thought I'd post and let everyone know of some experiences that I had. I am currently 6 days into my 2nd ever grow. All 10 of my 1/2 pint jars are taking off. I'm just using the PF Tek/MMGG method. The two jars that I put 2 cc's of spore solution into are notably faster. This time the jars are colonizing much faster than my 1st grow. I attribute it to the incubator I made, using a fish tank heater in a jar of water place inside a styrafoam cooler. I put I thermometer in there and its around 82 F. Guess having the right temp for colinization makes all the difference in the world. I rambling anyways...

I find that keeping my incubator at 87- 97 degrees makes the mycelium take off like a rocket! (both rye and pf tek)

I read above 90 F was too hot for PF jars while 84 F-86 F is ideal. It depends on what strain and species your growing, too. There's a nice chart in the Shroomery under General Info. : Mushroom Cultivation FAQ : The PF Cake - Incubation Through Birthing : What Are the Optimum Conditions Under Which to Store the PF Jars.

Say, can I have some of your purple berries?
Yes, I've been eating them, for six or seven weeks now, haven't got sick once.

The troubles you might have with higher temps are that:

a. Your temperature reading equipment may be innacurate, and 106 is thermal death (that's only 9 degrees difference from 97).

b. The temperature inside your jars is higher than the external temp.

c. Higher temperatures tend to favor bacteria and other kinds of contams more than the mycelium.

d. According to Stamets (kitty swears by Stamets), ideal temperatures for incubation are 84 - 86.

My cat keeps his incubator between 83 and 85 degrees, usually.

I'm speaking from experience... 87-97 (varied) is ideal.

The trick is to turn it on the perfect temp for colonization in the beginning, because there is no mycelium yet.

Once there is more mycelium, it produces heat, which results in too high a temperature. That is why it is wiser to lower the temps a bit once there are serious signs of colonisation.
