Unless you have a basic ability to multi-task. A bodhisattva can easily spend each moment in thankfulness while performing other duties. For the rest of us, a moment of contemplation and reflection might do us some good.

Why not carry it out further? Pause before each breath and give thanks for oxygen-rich air. Thank your heart for each beat.

When you have mastered that, give thanks for each photon that comes from the sun that brings light and warmth.

After that, well - that is the ultimate and you will have no time left for anything else.

You WILL have time left. This is where "The Way of a Pilgrim" comes in, and prayer of the heart.

Thanksgiving is a healthy response even in an existential, non-ontological sense. What I hear in your
response is arrogance. The existential "givens" in your life - the 'isness' of your life could be horrible. Thanksgiving does not necessitate 'belief' in a non-experienced Deity, but it is, rather, a fully human response to the existential 'givens' versus the existential 'possibilities' Thanksgiving is a subtle but profound realization that allows for humility instead of arrogance and its corollary - self-importance.

I've been spending a lot of time eating with assorted friends and relatives over the holidays, and in almost every case someone insists on saying grace.

I'm sure this isn't the first time this question's been asked, but since none of my friends or relatives has come up with a satisfying answer, I though I'd ask here. I don't expect any better results though.

You need new friends. Or tell them to keep there superstitions in the jungle where they belong.:monkeydance:

I don't mind taking part in them....
Does it make sense, I guess it depends on what makes sense to you....
Traditional rituals of thanks....  I am thankful for a few of them....
I got to see quite a few friends and family (that I wouldn't otherwise see) over the last week -
because of a few of those traditional rituals....

He arose so He is not in a tomb.

He was for three days at least and that tenderized him up plus the fact that he went to Hell cooked him and so he's ready for munching.

He saw no corruption so He is not tenderized and not ready for munching.
He sits on the right hand of God alive and well.
