Saying Grace

Does it make sense to thank God for food that will satisfy the hunger he also gave you?

I've been spending a lot of time eating with assorted friends and relatives over the holidays, and in almost every case someone insists on saying grace.

I'm sure this isn't the first time this question's been asked, but since none of my friends or relatives has come up with a satisfying answer, I though I'd ask here. I don't expect any better results though.

What good would food be without hunger?

Regardless of whether or not you believe in God, I think it's healthy and mature to count your blessings and be thankful for what you have.

that is ridiculous, counting blessings before dinner is a waste of time and makes the food cold

why thank god for food that you worked for and earned?

Because God wants to fuck you out of it if you don't.

If you say grace for so long that your food gets cold, you're doing it wrong.

Quote:

Because you an opportunity to earn it. Have you ever stopped to think about how privileged you are? Do you know how many people would love to have the food that we take for granted? I think saying grace is a humble acknowledgement of how privileged you are to be in such a position and a reminder not to take it for granted.

He didn't say that one ought to thank god, only that it is healthy to be thankful for what one has. In this chaotic world, one could be starving to death in Darfur, so why not allow feelings of thankfulness (different from gratitude) to arise before eating a healthy meal in the comfort of one's own dwelling?

Of course, it's usually those of more meager means who are more thankful for what they have. The privileged classes tend to take it for granted. I suspect this might be one reason for the higher rate of religiosity among the poor.

When I see food and wonder at how God created such animals and plants to eat, and how delicious these wondrous creations are, I can't help but to give thanks. I'm thankful not only for the food, also for the fact that I am able to thank Him, only through the blood of Jesus.

Why not carry it out further? Pause before each breath and give thanks for oxygen-rich air. Thank your heart for each beat.

When you have mastered that, give thanks for each photon that comes from the sun that brings light and warmth.

After that, well - that is the ultimate and you will have no time left for anything else.

Education level is related to both income AND religiosity. The more education one receives, the higher one's income is likely to be, and the lower one's religiosity is likely to be.
