Does trich have rhizo growth?
    #7806828 - 12/28/07 09:05 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I am under the impression it does not. Here's why I'm asking..

A few weeks ago I innoced some wbs quart jars with an LC I made. Several days later growth was really nice, but I noticed a speck of blue-green on one of the grains. I knew it was probably trich, but I thought perhaps it was myc bruising from the shaking of the jars. When I got home from work later that day there was green everywhere, in both jars, out they went.
That attempt was more of an experiment than anything else. I didn't have proper lids, I was only using several coffee filters held on with rubber bands, and I'm positive any random spore could have made its way through that with enough time.

So on to my second attempt now, just trying to get things down. Made new lids from the original jar lids, with foil, coffee filters, duct tape etc etc. Much better than before. Again, I innoced with an LC that I know is good, i have several PF jars growing it out right now. Few days later, growth looks good, except I notice a bit of growth right at the bottom of all three jars. I figure this is either two things: I put in enough LC to have it seep down through the grain and rest at the bottom (didn't think this was likely) or the grain at the bottom of the jars wasn't completely sterilized in the PC, possibly being underwater or something along those lines. I decided to let them grow out to see, making sure not to shake the bottoms of the jars amongst the rest of the grain. Well today I looked and thought I saw some rhizo growth from the myc on the bottom, which leads me to believe it may have just been excess LC that made its way to the bottom.

So back to the original question, trich doesn't produce rhizo growth, correct? These "contams" at the bottom are likely just my myc? Sorry for the essay, but there was a bit of a story behind the question!

cheers!

Trichoderma does not produce rhizomorphic mycelium, nor do coffee filters work as contaminant barriers. You'll need to build proper filters if you want to succeed. I often compare using coffee filters to stop contaminants with using a barbed wire fence to stop mosquitoes.

thanks RR

so the contam from the first wbs round was most definitely via the top, and the growth on the bottom of these new ones is probably excess LC. I'll keep my eye on it to look for further rhizo growth or green
