Brewing beer and shrooms

A mate of mine from Berlin was telling me about the German beer purity law. Basically in Germany beer is only allowed to have Water, Grain and Hops. He was telling me this was partly due to the fact that back in the day people brewed beer with all matter of things, including magic mushooms. I am a keen brewer and I was thinking about this. Beer making involves alot of heat, boiling water and what not, not to mention everything has to be sterile. The shrooms couldn't be added at the wort stage cause the heat would break down the psilocybin and it couldn't be added at bottling due to contamination reasons. Any one heard of this and know how it works? Perhaps have a recipe? Cheers Gen

I would think that if you added powdered mushrooms at the end of the boil, and let them boil for a few minutes you'd be fine. Remember that people make tea, and that's with boiled water. You'd definitely want them to boil in the wort for a bit so that you kill any germs hiding in your mushrooms.

Yer thats a good point, I didn't even think about tea. Any idea what temp psilocybin starts to break down, or for how long they can withstand 100 degree temps for? Just out of curiosity, I only brew with 3 things, anything more isn't real beer, lol. Gen

You know what you could do, siphon most of the wort into the carboy for a normal batch, then have a little bit left in the pot (enough for about four bottles) and add the mushroom powder, boil for an additional 2 minutes (surely this won't effect poteny that much) and then use a different carboy as a test batch. What kind of beer do you make? I've made a really strong Amber before.

soak the mushroom powder in everclear or high proof vodka for a week, then add that mix to the brew at the same time as you add the yeast

You'd have to make sure not to get any mushroom spores into the liquid either while it's fermenting, you could cause mycelium growth that could harm the fermenting yeast?
Best way would be extracting the pure psilocybin, and adding it after the brewing process.

Idbrew beer as per normal, then boil up the shrooms to make a small amount of tea. And add some to a few bottles when bottling. That way you only ruin a few bottles if it doesnt work. If it does work then do a bigger batch. Id like to add some to my 20 litre kegs but the keg would last for to long and the beer will deteriate. You could also drop a mushy into the bottle when bottling but id probably drink the beer while it was young.

All grand ideas, I don't know which to try. I scored a new fermenter and a fuck load of bottles yesterday so I am thinking it is about time to put a brew down. Might skip the additives this time around tho, lol. Cheers, gen
