questions from a newbie
    #7805723 - 12/27/07 09:58 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Between now and the end of my winter break I'm getting my stuff together to take a serious crack at growing mushrooms in my apartment at school. I've read the magic mushroom grower's guide thoroughly and I feel like I have a good understanding of it. I plan to use the wide mouth half pint jars for colonizing. I'm going to make the terrarium as big as I can find and fit in my closet.

I just have a couple things before hand..

I understand from some threads on here that analog hygrometers with the calibration screw are the way to go here. do these read humidity from the backside or frontside? what i'd like to do if I was going to get one of these is have it mounted in a hole in the side of my terrarium so i can read it without opening the thing up, ya know? like how some humidors for cigars are. is this doable, or will i need to have it just dangling in there sorta?

are digital thermometers with the wired probe ok, or do those degrade in accuracy also like the hygrometers do? should i just have 2 cigar guages side by side for each factor?

On producing humidity...
After looking at a lot of pretty crummy and awkward shaped ultrason humidifiers, What I am considering is just building one to suit my needs exactly, rather than pay for a bunch of bullshit features that I don't want. The links below shows a few stripped down ultrasonic disc assemblies that I am looking at to maybe do this with.

http://tinyurl.com/yv2fnl
http://tinyurl.com/2rmy36

These look like they'd be great, but I've seen reviews with some people who disagree. I'm currently using an older sunbeam ultrason humidifier of my mom's just to moisten my bedroom, and it's been in storage for atleast the last 5 years, wasn't cleaned right when it got put away, and it works good as new. Then theres reviews on some of those discs that say they quit workin after a week. What the hell? Should I just get a readymade one with a decent warrenty and non-destructively modify as needed? I'd really like to put one together myself if someone knows of a sonic disc I could get that'd be reliable.
Additionally, I read somewhere that you can adjust the output of these by simply wiring a resistor inline. The actual context that I found that in was referring to store bought humidifiers, which use a potentiometer to adjust their output, and by adding a ~5K ohm resistor inline with it, the factory standard low becomes the new high for applications like these where you need it cut down. Could I wire in a rheostat since I won't really know how much I need until it's all setup?
Last thing is operating height of the disc in the water. I know there is a minimum depth they are supposed to operate at, but what about max? I want to make this thing so it can run for days without refilling the water, and when you need to, you simply unscrew a cap at the bottom and flush the solid deposits left over from evaporating water down the sink or toilet. If I have this disc 10 inches under the surface of the water, will I still get humidity being produced or is this to much? If it won't work like that, can I just use a float valve to allow new water into the humidity area from a larger reservoir to keep my depth on target?

I'm gonna go and get the hygrometer atleast tomorrow and probably look for a good cooler to do this in. I'll check back here to see what you guys have to say before doing so.

If I get my temperature lighting humidity and nutrient balances down pat, what kind of yields can I expect from this? I wanna grow em for myself and a group of friends to be able to trip decently often when we're all together and have time for adventure. Anyone have a ballpark figure of how much dry weight per half pint jar? I'd like to be able to make 3-4 ounces a month if that sounds reasonable...

Anything else you guys wanna recommend or comment on is much appreciated. Hopefully I sound decently educated in this post cause I'm really trying to be serious about doing this right and getting something to show for my efforts.

Thanks a bunch
-Jon

Id say go for it.. It all depends on what kind of dorm room you got.. Ive seen dorm rooms that have a grow room in a walk in closet and they didnt get caught in the 4 years they attended the college..

man do somting simple. Get the jars fully colinized by a fish aqaurium by some perlite which you would dip in water to get it wet then put it at bottom of fish tank an then put ur fully colonized cakes on that an put saram wrap on top the the tank an let it sit like that open the wrap to let air in once in a while. but thats what i did simple an easy

I'm going to assume your off campus. Also, in my opinion you should forget talking about yields at this point.

Growing mushrooms takes practice. Sounds like you've done some reading which is great. But hands on experience is key. Once you've seen first hand how the mushrooms respond to the conditions you create you'll then be able to start shooting for what kind of quantity's you wanna produce. PF cakes are a good way to see the full growth cycle of the fungus from germinating spores to your mature fruits dropping spores. If you chose to go this route lower your expectations for yields and forget advanced environment controllers like humidifiers. Just get some perlite and use the perlite humidification technique with manual fanning. It works very well. while your waiting on your cakes do further research into how you wanna go about getting the quality and yield you want. But start simple, you don't wanna burn down your apartment trying to modify a humidifier you never really needed in the first place.

If you want simple a mono-tub would probably suit you very well. You don't have to mess around with adjusting outputs of humidifiers or playing with timers.

let's not forget that although growing and eating mushrooms can influence your life in very positive ways. It's unfortunately very illegal. Consider containing your excitement (by keeping your mouth shut) about your new hobby as a personal challenge of self-discipline.

I'll interpret the "apartment at school" as a off-campus private dwelling and not a dorm room. Dont grow in your dorm room. Look at this: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/7575312/an/0/page/1

I guarantee that poor bastard thought he'd never get busted either. "Spring Hill administrators say they got a tip from a student that drug activity was happening in Anthony Soscia's room". All it takes is one overheard conversation. Or maybe the fact that you let no one in your room makes people suspicious and they think your on a jihad or some shit and kick in your door looking for a bomb. Not only is your family bullshit and your college career (and perhaps any future jobs) in serious jeopardy, you could also do time even for a first offense. The laws for manufacturing drugs weren't designed for college kids experimenting. Many have minimum sentences and shit. Really, its not worth it.

</sermon>

The analog hygrometers I have have plastic/glass on the front and open slots in the back. So you could mount them like you mentioned. Its difficult to say what your humidification needs are if we dont know your fruiting chamber plans. I have a mini greenhouse with 3 shelves, search for "mini greenhouse" on ebay. They're popular around here.

Most seem to get away with a single coolmist inside the greenhouse, but I had to add a ultrasonic. The space heater was sucking up all the humidity in the room. Just having the ultrasonic is plenty to keep the greenhouse at 95% or above with the coolmist running 24/7 for FAE (probably overkill). Hopefully that gives you an idea of what you'll need.

Its hard to say what your yields will be. We just figured out I averaged around 7 grams per BRF cake last grow. There's so many variables its hard to say though. If you want a few oz dried, I would spawn some of those jars to a bulk substrate like coir. I did both cakes & a few bulk coir bins my first time and found that bulk is very little if any additional work compared to cakes, and the payoff is much bigger. I found even with all my fuckups they grew very well.

Good luck.

If you are in a place that may have visitors you'd be best suited to have something that doesn't make any noise. So perlite humidification would be the smart move in my opinion. I like the RR style FC.

Well said Musher_420.

I'll do my best to answer your actual question because I hate it when people don't answer my questions. If you get a fogger unit and want to modify it to work harder I.E. over rev the motor you'll need the spec sheet so you can see how the motor control unit works. It probably isn't a good idea though. Odds are the motor isn't designed to handle higher voltages or currents than it is already being supplied. Don't forget they make these things as cheeply as they can so they can make money. These things are made for NASA standards. There's a possiblility you can run too much current through the control wires and litterally burn the wires. Anyway you'll need specs on the motor control unit if you want to do this. That's how you'll know what to install and where (in terms of just jumpering a resistor or adding a pot.) You'll probably want something like a ten turn pot. That'll give you lots of control. The resistance of the pot would depend again on the specs for the motor control circuit.

Still I say go with the sure and silent method of perlite humidification. It works, you can hide it easily, and it won't draw attention by making noise.
Good Luck to you.

For starters sorry I guess I should have been more definitive and explicit on my living situation: I have an apartment with 2 friends. It's off campus and not affiliated with the university in any way. We dictate who can come in to the residence, and the only people who come into my room are 1 of my roomates and my girl... both which I will educate on the seriousness of keeping this quiet before any illegal part of it is in my room.

Thankyou for the sermon, I've gotten a similar one from my inner monologue plenty of times and have decided this IS something I want to pursue. I'm not exactly an ordinary college student... I have no problem sacrificing a relaxed environment to keep this safe. I'm that crazy guy you hear about who synthed nitroglycerin in his bedroom. except I did it right and didn't blow the house up.

perlite humidification sounds like somethin i'll go with for the time being. i'm suprised I didn't find that when I was reading, or maybe I did and just passed over it.

I'm in the process of watching the videos now. on the terrarium with drilling lots of holes for passive CO2 exchange... if this were going in a closet like i said, thus not getting much air movement, would a small computer fan or similar be something I should consider? powered intake and passive exhaust like have that on 1 side pushing air into the box, with the same tiny holes all over to exhaust through. or still unnecessary? if the perlite does begin to dry up before theyre done fruiting, is there any way to rehydrate it? or will it just not be an issue? do you just use a thicker layer of perlite for more cakes?

so ya i'll hold off and not get a humidifier and just the stuff i need for the jars. I'm still at home right now and will be doing this at college. is it alright for me to get the substrate into the jars and have them basically ready to cook and inoculate when I go back? or should i not let them sit moist and stuff for that long? will other fungus likely start growing in it and use up the nutrients?

thanks again for the help
-Jon

Don't store them uncooked or they will grow contaminants. Once sterilized they will keep for a few weeks no problem.
