dunking a casing

i dunked this casing under water for twelve hours after my first flush and look what has transpired since! the perlite came out from the bottom and fell on top when i drained it so a tip for next time---use verm as a bottom layer instead although the perlite does not seem to hinder growth at all.

From what I understand, you can skip the bottom layer altogether. But, whatever.

You used perlite as a bottom layer, and then put your substrate right on top of it? Or is there some kind of tray I'm not seeing? That's rather strange.

yup, i put the substrate directly on the perlite. ive done it with just about all my casings and have never had a reason to change it. i know some say you dont need a bottom layer but i find if i soak the perlite before i lay it that the humidity stays higher longer in the type of tub i use with no need for misting. never had a problem with contams either--i think i read once that perlite does not really harbour much that is appealing to contams as vermiculite does.
