our view of earth
    #780532 - 07/27/02 05:07 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

is there any reason we view earth to be north is up and south is down? what if our maps of the world were flipped upside down and it was considered normal, canada would be on the bottom and south america would be at the top, it would all be upside down but it would have always been like that.

im just wondering if there is any real reason north is up and south is down, or did we just choose one because we had to choose something?

As with anything we need some sort of convention to make life easier to understand and get along in. North was chosen as such because of the magnetic pole. Your question is like asking--what if we counted 1,3,7,2,4,6,10,9,8,5---- at some point a random convention has to be chosen to make us more efficient at communicating and interacting; so certain rules are chosen!!

The map that we are familiar with today is not an accurate depiction of our physical earth, but rather a representation of comparitive political importance. We tend to rank "higher" as more important than "lower", which is why the US is up at the top of the map. The size of the countries depicted is also based on their importance, NOT their physical size.

This is called the Peters Projection Map, and it?s an area accurate map:

And this is the map that most of us know:

In other words, it?s all about politics..

No projections are accurate. Projecting a sphere onto a flat surface will always result in distortions. The Mercator Projection that most of us are familiar with is not part of a conspiracy. It is not specially designed to make more powerful countries look bigger. We use it more often than the Peters Projection because there is less distortion of land masses. Paranoia man, you gotta watch that. The "north" is "north" because it was established that way a very, very long time ago by people living in the northern hemisphere.
