Tubaria furfuracea? Noob ID request
    #7805272 - 12/27/07 07:57 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

So I have just started going out and looking for mushrooms. Like many here, I am looking for actives but enjoying finding all the others too and trying to make some IDs.

* Habitat
Wood chips up a small hill from a stream. There is some grass coming through the chips. There is a Douglas Fir tree nearby and some large old oaks. I am in the south bay near Los Gatos.
* Characteristics of the gills
The gills are a slightly tan or cream colored. They are attached to the stalk.
* Characteristics of the stem
Stems are fibrous and hollow. Their width ranges from 3 to 5 mm and they are 3 to 5 cm long. No ring or volva visible.
* Characteristics of the cap (diameter,color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
Young caps are about 3 cm across. The young ones are domed and they turn up and get wavy with age, turning darker brown and showing through to the gills around the edges.
* Spore print color
Making a print now, will update as soon as it is in.
* Color that the mushroom bruises
Didn't notice any bruising.
* Scent of the mushroom
It smells like a mushroom to me. There is no distinctive odor other than the expected mushie kinda smell.

It's been interesting reading here over the last few weeks, I have learned a bunch and look forward to learning more. Thanks!

Looks like 'em!  Good job on the ID.  :smile:

The two round caps in the third photo might be Galerina or a different Tubaria species.

you know, Curecat, this particular post of yours

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6445990#Post6445990

especially the side by side photo

I dunno why this hasn't been done more often. I think it's because it's hard for experts to remember how difficult it was as newbies to tell the difference. For somebody like me, it looks the same sometimes from 30 yards, but up close?...no way

anyway, that's a bookmark for me, and I think it should be used more often, because I think it's good color, good size example, definitely something for newbies to print and take with them out in the wild

you'll see the tuberias on the left far more often than you will cyans

tuberias are less dense, more delicate, and fall apart in your hand easier, as opposed to cyans which are tougher and more rubbery. They also come up faster than cyans too..Tuberias also > don't bruise blue, don't have a white stem, don't smell the same, don't have dark gills or a purple spore print, etc

I really think some of us should make more of an effort to do these side by side comparisons, because I got asked the question again today by somebody who said my cyans looked like some poisonous ones they've seen around lately

I used Curecats photo as an example of something easy to find..I have photos of both myself, but not categorized and easy to find yet

anyway, good stuff there...really!

Yes, Tubaria furfuracea.  They are everywhere right now.  Their shape, at times, resembles cyanescens.  I've momentarily mistaken them as dried cyans, as both lose their color with drying.  However, cyan stems are white, cyans bruise blue and cyans are more durable.  You'll notice that the Tubaria crumbles and breaks rather easily.

When fresh, the pictured Tubaria have an orangish tinge, while the cyan  will have a caramel tinge.

:goodluck:

Here are a couple habitat shots from last weekend with the two species in close proximity:

Thanks for your replies! Funny that Auweia and Alan posted those two photos as they were ones I had pondered over previously. Alans photos were the ones that allowed me to figure out what I had this evening.
I was excited when I first saw the Tubaria's in the wood chips today since I was fooled, but it is exciting to have figured out an ID for the first time too, so I'll settle for knowledge today. ;-)

Hey thirdwire, I found the same shrooms right near you (los altos hills area) a couple days ago, I guess they're all around there.
