Large forest mushroom
    #7805021 - 12/27/07 06:31 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I found these in a Redwood and Douglas Fir forest on the Northern California Coast. It's probably an easy i.d., but I don't have a proper field guide with me. They were quite large and distinctive.

Cap: White-gray to tan, ranging from 10-20 cm. Covered in rounded bumps, much like human warts. Inrolled to plane and becoming vase-like in some specimens.
Stem: dingy-white, 3-4 cm. thick. Meaty.
Gills: white and decurrent.
Habitat: growing from the forest floor. Lots of needle litter.
Smell: pleasant and mild.
Print: It didn't print!

Some had toppled over under their own weight. The gills appeared blade-like. I didn't notice any exuding latex.

???

This species has a lot of antibiotic and anti-viral chemicals which cause it to stick around for a long time instead of decaying, which makes it look a lot more common than it really is. Only younger specimens are still dropping spores.

Its easy to confuse with Clitocybe nebularis, but doesn't smell quite as nasty.

I think I'll throw it out my apartment window at the next jackass that lays on his horn.  :hehehe:
