Useful notes for hardening your computer

A pdf attached was a class distribution in a course I took a while back. It includes encryption, passwords, useful programs, and links.

This was for DoD level security.

enjoy.

Sorry to say, but not a very good document. "DoD level security" you say? I saw absolutely nothing about logging and auditing which are a very large part of any C2 secure system; of course "DoD level security" would really be B1 secure, minimum.

Not only is the document irrelevant to "DoD level security", a quick browse of the first few pages shows many mistakes and omissions:

Password length and complexity makes no mention about complex passwords being difficult to remember thus users tend to write them down. It makes no discussion of social networking, the most common method of "hacking" a password. It also makes no mention of password rotation schedules, their strengths and weaknesses. It makes no mention of biometric authentication. No mention is made of keyloggers or other common attacks.

BIOS passwords are pointless as well. If somebody has access to the hardware, then they have access to the data (unless it is encrypted).

Windows XP Firewall "This will allow you to connect to the internet without worry about the computer being compromised by one of the many worms floating around."

Uh, no.

Firewall "As a general rule hardware firewalls block incoming traffic and allow all outgoing traffic"

Uh, no. This may be true of cheap firewalls, but it is not a good policy. A true hardware firewall will not let any unauthenticated traffic pass in either direction.

I'll stop now. There are some interesting bits, but to somehow associate this with "DoD level security" is a laugh at best, and misleading to those that don't know better.

I associated it with DoD level security as it was a government contractor who taught the three week class in surreptitious entry, computer forensics (encase) and data encryption as it applied to my particular career field. I'm trying to maintain a vestige of anonymity by not saying what branch or organization.

As for account auditing, attached is also a recommended checklist for review.

Its not an attempt to mislead anyone. I was merely trying to provide some information I felt was relevant to many security concerns here.

This was written in 2006 by people who were teaching tech-illiterate operators.

Pretty good for that purpose, but still lacking in some basics. I will look at your second attachment later, when I have time.
