Rhizomorphic Puerto Ricans are CRAZY
    #7804694 - 12/27/07 04:59 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

My friend has some Puerto Ricans on a couple cakes, and they are completely covered in white "stuff" that looks like cake icing. They look VERY healthy but the other strains put in the FC at the same time have fruited 10-14 daze ago. The PR's sit on about an inch of vermiculite and have sent out little rhizomorphic "roots" all through it. How long to wait for them to fruit? Things are aggressive but just don't seem to do anything.
Is there a point where he should re-dunk, chunk 'em out....OR What?
Thanks for any help.

maybe use perlite instead of vermiculite for humidification?

maybe try dunking them, then putting them back in the FC. Also Perlite is a good idea as well

Hey thanks! Went back over and looked at his set up....instead of setting the cakes on the jar lid with a bit of vermiculite, he has cut off 1 and a half inches off the bottom of 1 litre soda bottles and placed 1 inch of verm in the bottoms, with the cakes on that. Holds a lot of moisture! The soda bottoms/cakes are placed on perlite, and the FC is always sweating on the sides.
COULD it be too much moisture? I know his other strains,Mazatepac(sp),Nepal Chitwan,TC's really LOVE the set-up, but the PR's just keep sending out more and more rhizo "roots",but never fruit.
Again, thanks for the replies.

All condensation on the sides means is that it is warmer inside the fruiting chamber than outside it. The temperature should be equal as condensation takes water out of the air, and you want 100% humidity.

But if there is no source of heat in the growing chamber(except for the heat generated by the mycelium), wouldn't condensation be a good indicator of high humidity?

Or that the temperature of your room (not the chamber) has dropped because the central heating has stopped for a bit, or a window has been left open or something.

How much condensation are we talking here?

Yes, that is a good point. The condensation actually gets to the point of running down the sides, not just beading up.
Plus, this is the first time since he started the PR strain that the cold weather has affected the heating in his house,it keeps cycling on and off.
I've never seen such aggressive mycelium look so good without fruiting. The other strains in the FC are on their second flush; the PR's look like they have stalactites hanging/shooting off the sides.
Hey, thanks to you all for taking the time to post. Mucho Gracias.

PR's are famous for being very hard to get to fruit.

Yep,he's given up on them. His Nepal Chitwan's are fruiting like crazy, while the PR's just sit there, taking up space. Another lesson learned!
Maybe they'll do better cased.

damn, so PRs are tough to fruit?? I just spawned a nasty poo/straw tray and am having humidity troubles.. my place has an ambient RH of like 17%.. fucking sucks.. and yeah, i agree with nibin, the condensation is due to the perimeter of the grow room being cooler, and bringing the air inside, close to the cooler sides, to its dew point, and forming condensation.

I had no issues when I tried to fruit my PR's...weird.
