I think that more experiments with coffee grounds (used coffee), and especially mixtures of powdered grains (BRF etc.) and coffee grounds can result in a useful PF Substrate like fruiting substrate.

The reason is that cafein is toxic to most microbial life (except fungi). Coffee agars may be very resistent against bacterial contamination (not molds), and a 'PF Substrate' in which a big part of the BRF is replaced by coffee grounds may be a more forgiving substrate for bacterial contaminated sporewater.

I have only performed a few experiments with coffee grounds. Cubensis will fruit on a cake made of vermiculite, water & used coffee - even better than on most other flours than BRF.

Perhaps that uncontaminated sporewater is easier to make of dilute coffee than of water, but the drawback of these sporesyringes will probably be a premature germination of the spores (limits both shelflife and legality).

Sporewater made of dilute semen will most likely have a strong antibacterial effect too (if i remember it correctly, semen is full of enzymes which kill bacteria in the male ureter). No idea what it does to spores. But if it results in a good product you may run into production problems if you get more syringe orders than xpected.

Dilute coffee may also be valuable in the production of whole grain (rye etc.) spawn. Especially in larger than halfpint jars. In those situations, the risk for Wet Spot bacterial contaminations is the most severe. Other than most antibiotics, cafein is both cheap and heat resistent.

A simple test would be to make a few jars with normal rye spawn and a few in which the water is replaced by dilute coffee. Apply an unsufficient sterilization (say 30 mins at 12 psi) and see if the cafeinated rye spawn stays clean of Wet Spot.

Would a solution made with pure caffeine powder be more effective than coffee. Is it just the caffeine that makes it useful, or is coffee used for nutrients as well?

I've added dry powdered egg white to pf style substrate to increase nitrogen (and hence increase yield) with good results.

Eggs have some kind of natural antibiotics in them. I'm not sure what they are but they may fight some contams.
