Panic attacks

For some reason I've been having panic attacks at work. This just started. Earlier this month, I was doing an orientation at work. I'm in HR, so I do these all the time and for a lot more people than I was doing it for that day (8ish). So I was definitely not nervous. But for some reason, I started to half way black out and shake and stuff. When I realized that everyone had noticed what happened, a huge wave of panic washed over me. I felt almost completely helpless. I told them that I wasn't feeling good and that I needed a minute to regroup. It was embarrassing, but I played it off as well as I could have. One lady suggested that my sugar was low or something and I just went with that.
Since then, I've had a couple of minor panic attacks and I've been feeling like I'm not far from the edge of having one at any time. I can't go on like that because I have to be involved in a lot of stressful situations and I can't wig out and humiliate myself. So I'm going to go to some sort of a doctor soon and see what I can be prescribed for me. From just what I've told you so far, what do you think they'll prescribe me?

xanax or valium or something. I've been dealing with anxiety for some time, never sought medical treatment (no insurance) I know it sounds silly, esp when you're on the verge of flipping, but taking a second to breathe deep breaths makes a world of difference. And meditating when you've got the spare time is invaluble.
I've been there, and I know that hearing this advice seems retarded when you think about the incredible force bearing down on you, but practice makes perfect.

I do drink a lot of coffee. But not any more than I have for 2 1/2 years. My diet isn't great and I haven't been exercising much lately.

Xanax is usually prescribed for panic attacks, as its quick acting and short lasting. Valium is more for anxiety disorders etc.
So yeah, im guessing xanax or one of the other short-lasting benzo's.

What would it be like to be on Xanax all the time?

That's good advice. I've noticed that meditation and breathing does help. Thanks.

No, but when that happens, I feel similar to the way I feel on a bad trip.

It's not good for you at all, you get really dependant on it and can get fucked up/pissed off when you don't take it.
I have a friend who has anxiety attacks, and she was prescribed Lexapro.

Yeah, that's what it seems like to me. I'd love to have a bottle or two of it, but taking it every day doesn't seem good.

Yeah I definitely like Xannies/weed every once in a while, just as long as you don't become dependant it's cool.

Well I do smoke weed every night. That certainly could be a factor. But I'm not going to stop smoking weed, so there must be some other solution. In fact, I'm not going to admit that I smoke weed when I go to the doctor. That's shady somehow. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but it seems shady.

I mean dependant on the xannies, I smoke every day too. And you can tell the doctor you smoke, it's actually a better idea to do so since he will know as much as possible about your body/conditions. Legally, he can't do shit about you telling him that unless there's reasonable suspicion (or whatever) that you're endangering yourself or others through your drug use.

Its quite common to experience a panic attack when there seems to be no reason what so ever(really there is an underlying cause). Theres no need to worry about having another as everyone experiences at least one at some point in their life. If the it starts happening on a regular basis or you start changing your life to avoid situations that might bring it about you will be diagnosed for panic disorder which will probably get you pills more readily than just one panic attack.

coffee will do that to ya also.. try and lower your caffeine doses.. and if you can completely cut it from your diet, and then see how you go...
Also, you DON'T want to become dependent on benzos. Consider it a very short term solution, if one at all.
good luck.

I have had more than one at work. I've had at least two small panic attacks since then. I'm positive that they would have been worse, had there been more people in the room at the time. I had one today, which is why I've decided that I have to do something about it.

No, she kicked me to the curb after 2 months. I was sad about that.

Thanks for the advice on the benzos. I'd like to be prescribed a bottle or two just so I could have them for special occasions, but I wouldn't want to take them every day. I don't know about cutting out the caffeine. I need to be very alert at my job and caffeine helps to reverse the negative effects from the weed that I smoke the night before.
