Different tapes and their ability to autoclave successfully... participate! 1

hey i was just wondering if anybody has tried autoclaving gorilla tape.. it great stuff, real strong, good with moisture.. but I want to know if the adhesive holds up while autoclaving.. I've read it's effective to 200F.. wonder if the little extra heat fucks with it..
i've also been trying to find polyethylene tape, and I think I have some.. Is most packaging tape polypropylene based (or at least DUCK brand)? They're site is lame, wont tell shit, not on MSDS at all.
I know I could just go buy the autoclaving tape, but there has to be thriftier ways. Also, I never see it with too great a width. I'd like around 3", but w/e...
Let me know what tapes have been good in autoclaving and which ones haven't held up. Try and include specific companies and types.. As for the gorilla and the DUCK packaging tape, I'll let you know if/when I give it a shot.!

I've seen gorilla tape used in at least one tek if not more. Don't ask me which though, I can't remember.
Gorilla tape is the one in an orange box isn't it?
Do a search.

It's cheaper for me to just keep the tin foil on the lids since you have to use it when cooking the jars anyway. Ive yet to have a problem with stunted growth due to gas exchange.

the white, cloth, medical tape works great. It stays in the same form after 1 hour at 15 psi. Regular silver duct tape turned to a very hard, plastic like substance, that I couldnt get off.

Duct tape sucks for just about everything but indoors room temperature uses. It's actually a misnomer, because it's horrible for taping ducts (the heat causes the adhesive to become weak, and the tape itself becomes brittle and falls apart.)
Just curious, but what are you using the tape for? Spawn bags?

I've used gorilla tape over a inoc hole on a lc jar. after the PC, it shrinks about a 1/16th of an inch in very direction. Had a little bump over the hole in the lid, but as it cooled the bump vanished. Still is flexible, and realy hard to get off. Cant really say how well it works, I only did 2 lc jars this way, and they both turned out fine.

Regular electrical tape autoclaves well. Masking tape sometimes burns up somewhat, but usually works alright.

duct tape is funy stuff, i use it alot as im in the music industry, it deteriates over time, try leaving that stuff on a carpeted surface for more than a couple of days and try and get it off, the glue becomes part of the carpet.
Its great for lots of things,, duct tape can fix just about anything but is useless at higher temps.

I once used duct tape(NOT duck tape) to repair the wing of an airplane that was heavily damaged by trees on a landing-gone-bad in the Alaska wilderness. Not only did the guy fly the plane out of that remote airstrip, but I caught up to him two weeks later in Anchorage, and he was still flying the plane around with half the wing held together by duct tape. Not recommended, but good stuff. I carry a roll of it in the back of my airplane at all times for emergencies.
I use micropore tape on jars. If you're wanting to make your own spawn bags, I doubt you can do it for less than the 40 cents the premade ones with filters cost. Either way, I'd suggest an impulse sealer over tape, if you want to make your own. RR

i have used duct tape like the shit they use for sealing joints on ac ventilation ducts is silver like aluminum foil and is super sticky. it will hold up to allot of heat and wont peel or shrink i cooked some jars in a PC and left it on high for about an hour and the tape was fine

Kupa!
In keeping with RR's aviation theme ......
I have heard the metalized tape refereed to as 'ditching tape' ... and have seen it used to cover 'lightening holes' ...... so when you ditch an aircraft in the drink, water doesn't rush in filling the airframe .... and you don't sink quite so fast !

Rico, I never understood your name or your avatar before this weekend, when I finally watched that movie from beginning to end....
The foil HVAC tape does sound like a good idea, as the adhesive is made to withstand heated ducting. Might be kind of expensive, though, at around $10 a roll.

a roll should go a long way. there are two different kinds though one has a protective layer you peel off the sticky side dont use this one
