What the heck is this on my straw log?

I woke up this morning to find strange mushroom formations around where I cut slits on my straw logs. They dont look like psilocybe mushrooms:

Is this bad news? I have never seen this before.

nope, cubensis amazon strain. It definitely looks like another mushroom taking advantage of the uncolonized areas around where slits were cut for ventilation.

It looks a lot like yeast contamination. The most likely cause would be that your spawn was contaminated. That would also explain the uncolonized areas on the log. RR

I picked the mushroomy chunks off. Didn't look like it was growing on the psilocybe mycellium so hopefully it will be alright. The contam doesn't smell like yeast, just smells like general mushroom smell. The uncolonized areas are where the straw was overly wet and tight from overpacking.

I doubt you overpacked, or the straw was too wet. The excess moisture will drain from the holes. I've packed logs awfully tight, and some commercial mushroom farms use hydraulic presses to compress the substrate. I would still suspect a problem with the spawn, providing your pasterurization was complete. RR
