Kinda like you playing the drums!

seriously though: shoosh, critics. this is about sharing music. that band wasn't my style either, but at least they looked like they were having fun.

It's exactly like me playing drums.
I don't put music videos of it on YouTube though.

Being a critic is fun. I find it especially fun when people get offended. I never understood getting mad about someone criticizing the music you listen to. We all have the best and worst taste in music.

Yeah, you're right. Being a hep young cat (i kid), I hear a LOT of people criticize music, but most of them never actually make any noise themselves. I'm torn, I guess. Being a critic is fine, but making a habit of shunning other people's creativity to create an identity for yourself is pretty lame. yep.

funny how indie is completely not a genre, at all.

at most it could mean obscure music, but that isn't really limited to a genre either.

just wanted to poke that in there

Although this was originally true it has kind of developed into a genre as well as broken into subgenres and what not.

just  :2cents:

i tried explaining this to jewunit in the wake of a good trip and he was hearing none of it. i described indie as a copy of other genres that is played for smalled groups of people. when someone tells me a band is indie when trying to describe their music, i usually have no idea what they mean. good to see someone else gives no credit to the word "indie" as a genre.

indie rock is what people used to call "college rock", it's not an exact sound, but it's an understood descriptor among fans of the term. that's my take. i actually googled "what is indie?" one time in an attempt to close this gap tooth beast of an argument, and i couldn't find a straight, agreeable answer anywhere. it's pretty negotiable, but the term probably won't go away.

anywho if you people havent heard the lava children, GET IT! they stole my love a few days ago. i cant stop listening to their ep.

To be fair, I had just finished tripping and I was pretty drunk.

I can see both sides to the argument. But just like when someone says "classic rock" or "rap" or "new wave" there are bands and musical concepts that pop into your head. Those might not be the same from one person to the next, and when using the term indie it's probably brings up the most diverse notion. However if I were to say "this is indie-pop" to someone it would bring up a different idea than just saying "pop."

I think genre terms are becoming more and more fuzzy with the increasingly expansive diversity that modern music has. So much shit is being blended and so much shit already exists that it's hard to pin one thing down. The argument that "rap" isn't a genre could probably be made since there are so many different styles. Chopped and screwed is different than typical underground is different than nerd is different than gangsta. But it's all rap, no?

hip hop is a pretty easily defined genre, despite its diversity.

but i more or less agree with everything you just said.

i don't know if anyone here listens to KEXP (radio station here in seattle, they broadcast online, pretty popular), but i've gotten into the habit of calling "indie rock" bands "KEXP bands." anything that sounds similar to the decemberists, band of horses, vampire weekend, built to spill, wilco, pavement, etc etc, (jangly guitars, heart-felt/"meaningful" vocals, fairly agreeable, inoffensive sound [your friends/family wouldn't tell you to shut that shit off immediately]) qualifies. just one more name for a tough to pin down genre.

I like to think of indie as do it yourself music ....................

I don't think all good indie music is good for the family-  Pixies sing a lot about incest and violence .
