Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline... best album ever...
bahahaha
I cant really think of my pick for the greatest... To me, In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson comes to mind, of course Pink Floyd's DSOTM is amazing too. Hard question

This is an impossible task. They only way to really say an album was the greatest is by how influential it was. That being said, you have to go with The Beach Boys pet sounds, Or the Beatles White album, or The Beatles Sgt peppers lonely hearts club.

An interesting question which I have long ago decided upon. There is really only one true monster. Many albums are great and some have been mentioned. Pet Sounds. Court of the Crimson King isn't even the best Crimson album. Dark Side is the tits and there are a couple Stones albums, especially Sticky Fingers. The Beatles are for homos. Blind Faith. Genesis Selling England By the Pound. Any one of the first three Zeps plus Zoso. Zappa Roxy and Elsewhere. The Dead Workingman and Skeleton and Roses. But none of the them is the total monster that is the Who's Who's Next. Top to bottom wall to wall brilliance, from Baba O'Reilly to Going Mobile, from Won't Get Fooled Again to Behind Blue Eyes. My Wife to Bargain. A true masterpiece. If you don't believe me play the whole thing again from beginning to end.

The short list, at first thought, would be:
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars by David Bowie... Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys... The Bends by Radiohead... The Name of This Band is Talking Heads

Very tough question and almost impossible to answer.
Right now I'd have to say the greatest album in my opinion is Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin. But tomorrow I might say Darkside of the Moon by Pink Floyd. Led Zeppelin IV kicked major ass...they used some very cool recording locations and the hit Stairway to heaven was recorded on that album.
Lateralus by Tool is mind blowing as well as their new one!
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is easily one of my favs as well.
Deep Purple's Machine Head rocks some serious ass as well(Lazy anyone? )
Ozzy's Blizzard of Oz is in there as well.
So tough to pick just one

Haha Some very interesting albums here. I can't believe I forgot dark side of the moon. Pink Floyd slipped my mind. Good too see Tool made peoples list, Lateralus was amazing, so was 10,000 Days. No one mentions the Eagles at all, Selected Works 1972-1999 was a great album, even tho it was a best of. Just showcase the bands greatness... Cheers, keep em' comming, Gen
PS. Jimmy Hendrix- Are you experienced Jimmy Hendrix- Axis: Bold As Love John Coltrain- Afro Blue Impressions Jeff Buckley- Grace Marilyn Manson- All his albums, minus the first and last, lol

this is a silly question, its like asking what your favorite kind of music is. Music is like food in the sense that there's alot more too it then just the general tantalizing of your senses, music builds an atmosphere and an environment on its own, without even trying. Something's sound great at some times, and at some times there's things I couldn't stand listening to at one point and love it the next.
But if I had to pick a seriously well produced album, it have to be dj shadow's entroducing.

It seems the people are going for anything by Pink Floyd. I remember when I refused to listen to them cause I thought they were a fag band, purely from the band name. How young and stupid I was... Why is music not as influential now as it was then? Every thing has been smashed out of the same mould these days, it is generic and boring as the next. There are very few exceptions.

Sounds like you need to open your ears and eyes. There's plenty of stuff to listen to, you just gotta look. I don't listen to older stuff nearly as much as I listen to new stuff, and I think plenty of it is influential.

Forty years ago it was much more difficult for a band to have its music heard, so there were fewer bands in the public eye, so the ones that took off really took off.
There is a ton of good music these days; music is more diverse than it's ever been, but you'd never know it if you're trying to find it on mainstream radio.

i nominate pet sounds, abbey road and any of the velvet underground's studio albums except squeeze as contenders. i never really got into any pink floyd album other than piper at the gates of dawn. there is no way, in my opinion, that dark side of the moon is even close to the best album ever. it's maybe in the top 50, if that.

The Cure - Disintegration
Type O Negative - October Rust
Tool - Lateralus
these are three albums that I love to listen to start to finish and I feel they tell an abstract story, so they are the best albums ever made IMO.

Well, what characteristics/attributes are we looking for? What qualities should 'the greatest album ever made' have? I'll have to say it's probably something by The Beatles or Frank Zappa. Although, it would have to be an album that transcends all genres and that's not something that either of those artists have effectively done. However, I'd say my favorite album ever made is We Sold Our Soul For Rock 'n' Roll by Black Sabbath.

This I would have to second. It seems pop songs these days and mindless trash, as I said before. I may have been a little to quick to say that all new music is meaningless tripe, a lot of it is, but there are still modern artists who are amazing. Another thing WhiskeyClone said was music is much more diverse these days than it ever has been, also I agree. But I think its been taken a little two far. Metal alone have like 4 billion sub-genres, from Grind-core to math-core, thrash, hair metal and any combination of two or more styles (Ghetto-trashgrindcore). Its stupid.

Supper's Ready is magnificent but side two drops off after Get 'em Out By Friday.
Watchu mean man, side 2 is Supper's Ready, all 23 minutes of it. I would probably go with 'Selling England' for best Genesis album as well if it weren't for Supper's Ready which somehow crept up on me and became one of my favorite songs of all time even though I was less than impressed after the first 6 or 8 listens.
Can Utility and the Coastliners plays after Get 'em Out by Friday along with Horizons(which is practically an intro for Supper's Ready). Are you saying you don't like Coastliners because I think it's one of the best, not to mention most concise, songs in the Genesis catalog. Listen again if you forgot how damn good it is:

At this moment in time, for me, the greatest album ever made is
Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan

I have to throw out Sigur Ros' untitled album as well.

I should have just said "the Other Side". Clearly side One for me is Supper's Ready. I haven't played the Get 'em Out By Friday side in years. Part of the problem is the Watcher of the Skies version on that album. The live version is so much better. I'll give it another shot but it's not likely to replace Selling England since I played both of them through to the other side. We've had similar musical convergences before, haven't we?

if there was a serious debate involving certain aspects of the progression of music, impact, etc.... then Pet Sounds would probably be #1.
but if I were stranded on an island with only one cd, I would pick...

Disco Volante by Mr. Bungle. such an epic journey of exploration that utilizes almost every genre of music while managing to be one of the only truly original albums in the last 20 years. everything John Zorn touches turns to gold.

Amazingly enough an album no one has ever heard of and even fewer people bought. I would think Greatest entails some kind of consideration for general popularity. Otherwise it would just be Favorite.

that is why I prefaced it with a situation that denoted a personal preference. But I dont think popularity should have any sway with what would be considered the greatest album of all time. If this were the case then elvis presley, garth brooks and mikey jackson would be the top 3 greatest artists of all time. The backstreet boys would be considered "greater" than zappa because of popularity. if anything, only concept/themed albums should be in the running, because it is an entire work of art, rather than a conglomeration of random focus-group-passed songs that have nothing to do with each other.

I kind of think it really has to. Otherwise, like I said, it's just favorite.Quote:

I understand and am clearly not making the case for a strictly popular consideration. Artistic value and influence are also factors. I'm trying to do a balancing act here.Quote:

Unless they are each and every one a masterpiece. I do understand that criteria as well. For that reason, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway was among my finalists. But it really is too limiting, in my opinion. There aren't that many.

your average music listener is a dumbass that has zero understanding of how to even go about appreciating real music. everyone thinks that they have good taste in music, but very few people actually do.... oddly enough, very many people are willing to admit that they dont know dick about visual art (paintings/sculptures), or at best will say "ohh Dali, Vincent, Michealangelo" or some shit like that and reveal themselves for the sophomoric comprehension/exposure they have had to such art. If we were to make a thread about the greatest painting of all time, we would get a lot of Dali's, Alex Gray (or is it grey?), and MC escher's nominated.... which is kind of like the equivalent to nominating Britany spears, justin Timberlake and Tupac in this thread.

I don't agree and when you say something like that about rock and roll you just sound like a pompous windbag. It is a visceral medium, accessible to all through their genitals, with a modicum of cerebral appreciation as a possible, but not essential, bonus. First and foremost, it has to make you want to move. Take a clue from Matthew Barney and Put a Sock in It.

well , it may not fit the textbook definition of being a concept album, but it definitely is themed, and uses a lot of melodic themes over again.
I also think one criteria is that the album should be playable from front to back. Carol King's tapestry is an album like that, which has almost single handedly inspired almost every single female musician... but it isnt a themed or concept album... it also is multi-platinum.
that is why I think this questyion is far too broad to answer.... so i made a thread asking what the greatest album is in individual genres. try that one out, I think it will be much easier, because no matter what, this is going to be a personal preference.

I gotta throw this out there, Earth's latest three albums are pure ace. HEX, Hibernaculum, and The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull are all excellent forms of ambient guitar music. Dylan Carlson is a master of his form.

This is impossible for me to answer, so i'll cheat and list 5 that immediately come to mind (in no order)...
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique Neil Young - After The Goldrush Radiohead - Kid A
other notables would include (but not be limited to):
The Kinks - Arthur, Or The Decline and Fall of The British Empire The Who - Who's Next Dylan - Blood On The Tracks Van Morrison - Astral Weeks Wu-Tang - 36 Chambers either of Joy Division's two studio albums (theyre equally amazing) Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz To Come Traffic - Traffic My Bloody Valentine - Loveless Sly and The Family Stone - There's A Riot Goin On Built To Spill - Perfect From Now On (doug martsch is the fucking man!) Dntel - Early Works For Me If It Works For You (UNDERRATED...my favorite electronic album from the 90's)
and now i've exhausted myself in an absurd (and failed) attempt at answering the poster's question.
...seriously though that is a beast of a question to tackle!
peace.

Kid A by Radiohead is by far the most amazing and influential album to me.
I bought it the day it was released having never listened to Radiohead before, not knowing what to expect. I had read about it in some magazine while I was on break at work and thought it sounded like it might be a cool change of pace for me. At the time I was accustomed to shitty, generic, and unoriginal pop rock bullshit from the top 40 charts.
Kid A blew my fucking mind wide open and I have since never looked back. I had never done any drugs at the time, so when I first got high it was the first thing I rushed to listen to.
