the placebo of enjoyment
    #7802775 - 12/27/07 02:32 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

As an FOH engineer, I spend about 60 hours a week running sound for bands to every possible audience.... I have run sound for faith hill, tanya tucker, vince gill, every single Wooten, Slade, the spin doctors, the wood brothers.... the list goes on and on...

and what I have noticed is rather bizarre to me.... when people get second hand accouts of how "awesome" player X was.... it instills some sort of preemptive affinity.
For example, people come from all over to see Victor Wooten play the bass.... and for good reason... he is an awesome bass player... but there are hundreds of equally talented bass players, and hundreds of better bass players than Victor Wooten playing all over town.
Any given night, I could send you to a show where you could see a bass player as proficient and amazing as Victor Wooten.
but people dont care about those guys... because they arent victor wooten.
A few weeks ago victor sat in with a gig for just one song, and the bass player playing the entire show was just phenomenal at the bass... better than VW (imo). the crowd doesnt even uncross their arms to clap for this guy... but when VW gets up and plays what most would consider a very basic and rather unimpressive bass solo, the crowd goes nuts.. standing ovation, phones out, cameras flashing...

I dont get it.
