Spore printing: fresh or dry caps?

I don't know if I should harvest one and do the spore thing right away, or take one of the dried ones.
Also, if anyone has advice about what type of mushroom to use, ie, light, dark, etc., that would be very helpful too.
A final question is with regards to the sterile technique: in the event that you do not perform the procedures with 'adequate' sterility, what is the outcome? Will you not get any spores, will they somehow be dangerous to use? Is there any way to tell if these things have occurred? Thanks in advance.

I don't like to come off as unfriendly, but you really should do a little reading in the frequently asked questions, and the main site before asking questions here. You will find your answer there in minutes.

you should use a fresh one right when the veil breaks to do a spore print.. lay it in a jar on some foil or on the counter with a cup over it.. should take a day or so to put a fat print on the foil.
use the biggest juiciest mushroom you got.
you can get contams if you dont have a sterile print.

Also note that spore printing is not sterile, but it is possible to have success with spore printing. Read the guides theres lots of good teks.
Dont worry about making a dark syringe. This is for 2 reasons.
First of as i said spore prints are not sterile, to more spores you use the more contaminate spores that could go for the ride
And 2nd, while a dark syringe has shown extremly fast colinisation, there has not been much evidence of good flushes. More germinating spores means lots more substrains, which not all will be compatible, resulting in sevaral organisms which inhibits fruiting. Using less spores gives much more chance of a single organism and less genetic variation.
an eight of a print is usually plenty, and remember that spores are microscopic so even a clear syringe of well suspended spores will be more than enough with just a few drops of solution at each inoc point ( a 10ml print can easily do 12 jars if u are accurate with inoculations)
If u do have problems with contams, then as an extra precaution take 2 prints from 1 cap, let it drop spores for 4 hours then move to a 2nd peice of foil)
As you get more experienced and progress, agar is really the best option if u decide to really start producing some good grows. With agar a contamination is not a lost cause. Myc that has been grown but has had a contam grow on the agar, a transfer can be made of clean myc to a new plate. A few transers and you should have a clean sample.
Agar also has the advantage of using very little spores, and also when u tranfer it will start to sector, which will be seperate substrains, and once u get each of these strains seperated on there own agar. Test it on 1 small grow, looking for good traits, ei fast colinisation rhyzomorphic growth, good flushs, potency.
If it performs poorly and all your enviromental conditions are right, that strain can be discarded.
I have already explained way more than you need to know.
Just so u know, i have never done these procedures or tested them for myself, not even succesfully takin a spore print yet, im still quite happy with pf tek at the moment.
But i have followed alot of posts closely, particularly RR and Agar and a few other well established mycologists (not sure if that is the correct term)
Good luck and have a good look around.

You actually need to put effort into growing shrooms. Do you think spores are like getting weed and you can pick the seeds out of it and start growing? This is not your mother's garden son
