Hi all. I haven't been on Shroomery in years but I return with an ID request. We love chanterelles here in Northern California, and I have usually only come across a single type: bright orange variety, with solid stems, and delicious!
Recently I came across some mushrooms which looked very similar to the variety I'm used to except for a few differences: -The stems appeared to be hollow rather than solid -their color is slightly different: more of a pale brown/orange than bright orange -the gills under the shroom top don't extend as low as the bright-orange-colored varieties' gills do
I'm posting two pictures: the brighter colored shrooms are the ones I've been enjoying for years (bottom pic I think), the darker ones are questionable (top); I'm afraid to eat them yet.
Any experience here folks? ---------------------------
Habitat: North CA. Redwood, alder, spruce woods. Growing from pine needles or from dead/ decaying wood. Near base of trees.
Gills: pale brown/orange colored, veiny-looking underside (like the viens of a leaf or a lichen)
Stem: pale brown/orange, HOLLOW inside. firm
Cap: darker brown shade. smooth, round or rippled (w/ larger ones)
Spore print: no noticeable sporeprint
Bruising: I can't notice any bruising, hours after picking
Location: Humboldt County California. USA. (US, Pacific Northwest kinda)

The top ones are not chanterelles, bottom ones are. Look for those false gills, like on the bottom speciman, the texture, and non-hollow stem are important too.
I don't know what the 1st speciman is.

They look like False Chanterelles (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca), but the hollow stem is a feature I have not seen before. I find them most often growing from dead wood.
According to some references they are mildly poisonous, so they should not be eaten. Also, reports I have on their edibility indicate that they don't have the flavor of true Chanterelles, so they would be a waste of time anyway.
Happy mushrooming!

all you gotta do is click "open". Opens in a second or less if you have good internets.

that's not the point. The point is, you can put images inline, which makes it easier for people to look at, and avoids possibly sending a fucking virus, thanx.

I agree the top picture is what we commonly refer to as false chanterelle. We have the same ones in the PNW, with gills and a hollow stem. A key to identifying them is the gills. Chanterelles do not have gills. Good luck hunting. RR

Chanterelles don't have gills. Don't confuse the structure of the fruit with gills. The picture on the right shows how they can be easily confused to the untrained eye. The mushroom in the middle is a false chanterelle. Note that the gills are 'attached' to the cap. The two outside mushrooms are Chanterelles, and notice how the grooves are formed out of the cap and stem itself, not distinct from them, as the gills on the false chanterelle are. RR
