Can cell phones be used as eaves-dropping devices?

Let's say you have your cell-phone in your pocket. It is powered on but it is of course hung up. Is it possible for the phone company or any other agency to listen in on conversations that you are involved in? Stuff like this fascinates me and I was just kind of curious.

i dont think that this is possible unless there is some sort of microphone inside of the cell phone that is on 24/7 and has nothing to do with calls..
but with the patriot act and shit, you never know..

I've heard this time and time again, but I'm not entirely sure on what the truth is. It would not surprise me one bit. I've heard there is also gps devices in most new phones. The only way to be sure they (whoever they are) couldn't listen or find you would be to take out the battery, I imagine.
My sinsemilla friend told me once, while I was picking up something from him, that if you're ever locked out of your car, and you have one of those keyless entry devices, that someone at your house with the spare keyless entry device can call you and press the unlock button as they point it towards the phone, all while you're holding the phone in front of the door handle, and it will magically pop open.
Wow.. what a run on sentence.

i dont know if you're making fun of me or making a joke so i'll reply two different ways..
i think you misunderstood me and im saying there would need to be an external device installed within the cell phone such as a bug (think james bond) that constantly transmits a stream of audio to a remote device. i dont think the microphone is on unless you are in a call. so no that's not what a cell phone is.
and i dont really get your joke if you are trying to make one.. sorry.

I can tell you with 100% certainty yes they can... it can also be done with the phone off and the batterie still in. All cell phones also have a GPS chip. your exact location can also be known. Its is also true with OnStar.
here is one story more can be found on google try cell phone tap off http://www.news.com/2100-1029_3-6140191.html

Oh, I was certainly not making fun of you! Please take no offense. I was just stating that I believe cell phones can be used as a microphone (bug) type device at any point, unless the battery is taken out.
so, that is what a cell phone is

The FBI has used this tactic. It is real, and they can use your cell as a very high quality mobile bug.
However, it is VERY improbable that they are using this tactic on YOU.
It's reserved for super high level investigations, so unless you are a drug czar or a terrorist cell leader, I doubt you need to worry.
In the future? Who knows...
This was covered somemtime in the last year or so... Try a search.
