What in the hell is this?

This looks extremely funky to me. Unfortunately we were leaving for the holiday just as the cakes began to pin. My "babysitter" was not well educated in this area, but helped me out by letting air into the chambers 3x/day. I believe what happened is that the severely black/brown mushies are "overcooked" so to speak. But for all I know we have cultivated the latest lethal contaminate known to man. We are soooo bummed. Are the half way decent ones salvageable? Will the brown dust wash off or should we pitch the hole lot?

Man, this is not good.

Those are just spores, lots and lots of spores. It is better to pick them before they sporulate as they look nicer and don't taste quite as strong. But there is nothing really wrong with them. You can try to wash them off but its not necessary.

such good news. Should I go ahead and pick them now and put them in a drying container? Would you wash them, or just let them be? do you think the cakes are still okay to try and get another flush out of?

Thanks so much. I was boo hooing there for awhile.

You definately want to pick everything now (yesterday would have been better). I wouldn't waste my time washing them which might be impossible anyway and would definately cause bruising, which lowers potency.

It has been said that the spores tend to inhibit later flushes, but that hasn't been my experience. You should be able to fruit those cakes again.

What strain is that? It seems to be exceptionally sporey.

Those are Colombian spores.
