I hate when this happens

Seems like with every computer I've had, the hard drive always ends up filling up even after uninstalling all games and several other programs. It seems like it fills up the disk space solely from software updates. Is this common? Is it just a sort of planned obsolescence? Is there anything I can do, short of buying a new computer or hard drive?

That shouldn't be the case. Im sure you did, but have you deleted your temporary files, and cleared the recycle bin? You have run anti-virus and spyware?
Now when you uninstall a game, it doesnt give show you with more free disk space?
BTW, how big is your harddrive, and how much is used by media and programs?

4mb is a lot for 20 years ago.
I used (audio) tapes on my commodore 64, 16 years ago. How much data can be stored on a tape?

On compact cassettes, around 650K per 90 minutes of tape.
It was pretty cool, you could actually broadcast the "noise" on the tapes and have a neighbor record it off... wireless file transfer...

Format the hard disk and re-install.
Windows does seem to fill up for no reason.
In the days of DOS, I never noticed hard disk space going down. I always knew what I had installed but now windows creates so much crap. It internet downloads shit without even telling you.
I hate windows now. Its so automated that its made it harder to control what its doing. I prefer doing it myself, then if something goes wrong its easier to workout the problem.

I mean
get a new hard drive. Windows XP must take up like 7 or 8 gigs maybe? I'm not sure...either way, that's not much room left. Unless you aren't downloading music and stuff. It should be fine if all you're doing is using it for internet and occasional documents or whatever
And don't you know what is taking up space, since you installed everything on it? 17 gigs isn't too much to keep track of..
