so i got these jars, but they werent really the kind i wanted. they are 12 oz. instead of 1/2 pint. i dont really have enough substrate to fill these babies up right. so my questions are do i really have to fill them up to the top? and if so how far would i have to go? like you know with a 1/2 pint jar you'd stop filling about 1/2 inch to the top and fill the rest with verm. or should i just multiply the materials by 1.5? if this doesnt make sense sorry, thanks

if you're using a cake, you'll need it fill up to the last half inch of the jar. are these jars widemouth/tapered? if not you can't use them for cakes
if you decide to go with a grain substrate, you don't need to fill it all the way up infact you never want to, better too little than too much

IMO some empty space is good (in a grain jar) so that there is room for the kernels to separate when shaken, to spread the growth throughout the jar. About 2/3 full or so.

a inch of head space is better then a half inch. Just make sure that you do not tilt these cake jars upside and all that shit. This caused the loose verm layer to roll around which in turn can allow the contams to land on the cake.

Just remember that u need to make sure your needle can get to the wet substrate. If u inject spores into the dry verm layer, they wont germinate, nothing to eat in the dry verm.
An inche of dry verm might be cutting it close, check with a syringe to see how far down the needle will go.
