contam fight
    #7799640 - 12/25/07 11:10 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I have always wondered this and now since I am PCin, or at least trying to PC my own jars I wondered should jars be tottally given up on at the first sight of a speck of green or fesiably could the mycelium fight the contam off and win? i have some jars that have like 1 speck of green but lots of other patches of myc, Now I have let contamed jars run just to see what they would do and have like whole green jars. Could the myc grow faster and be stronger than the contam untimitly killing it? Like I mean trich because I know that it is not toxic so as long as the myc takes over it I don't see why I couldn't birth and fruit.

?

No. Toss out moldy substrate.

i disagree, as long as they are in jars they shouldnt cross contaminate, as long as you have good ster. habits. I say watch the mold for growth, it could be bruising from bumping or shaking the jars. But then again if the green is entirely independent of the myc. then i would still give it 2-3 days then toss it. mold will show considerable growth in 2-3 days.

Bad advice. No jar filter is 100% effective, and a jar that is full of mold spores WILL leak some to surrounding jars. I've seen this many, many times. One jar will get contaminated but not noticed right away, and all the jars surrounding it will also become contaminated. There's a big difference between a filter being able to handle the ambient spore load, vs the trillions of mold spores released by a contaminated jar in the immediate vicinity of other uncolonized grain jars.

Contaminated jars should be tossed at first sign of green. Mushroom mycelium does not bruise blue until after full colonization, so it isn't bruising.
