Fruit or wait?
    #7798960 - 12/25/07 06:19 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I have a few fully colonized cakes, and I don't want them to die on me like I suspect happened last time.

I am leaving for a week tomorrow, is there anything I can do to ensure the cakes don't die or dry out?

Well... A week is a long time for the fully colonized cakes to just sit there.
They might get contamned or something from sitting in there own metobolites.

You should just fruit them or maybe go invitro

Wait.

They will be perfectly fine.  Ideally you want to wait 4-7 days from the point your cakes go to 100% colonization then fruit them.  In fact I've left 100% colonized cakes in the jar for over a month and they've been just fine.

You are more likely to get a contamination from taking them out of the jars EARLY than you are to take them out a little late.

One reason I've found for waiting that extra week is that often times the center of your cake ISN'T colonized even though the entire outside of the cake is colonized to 100%.  Though the center is encased in a living shield it isn't invincible.  I would imagine this uncolonized center is particularly vulnerable during the dunk phase of the "dunk and roll" that is commonly done immediately after birthing a cake.

So wait.  You'll be just fine.  And update us with some pics will yah?:goodluck:
