I just built my own PVC martha and it's working out very well so far. In the past I've used some modified storage tubs, but nothing special like a monotob.

After this grow in the martha, I'm going to try out some monotubs. Everyone seems to get great results with them.

How do you have your martha set up?

Two trays of wet perlite at the bottom of the chamber keep it at roughly 50% humidity at all times. There is also a cheap cool mist *inside* the chamber that brings it up to ~95% - 100%.

Two 60 watt CFLs 12/12 schedule. Small air pump running 12/12.

That's pretty much it.

Yeah thats my next project, so simple and effective. Plus you dont even need perlite.

There are however more risk of contams.

If i was doing monotubs as we speak then i would probably favour a mono over a shotgun.

I need bulk substrate experience before I move on though. Pasteurizing properly is something that still scares me a bit, and I don't think I can do it quite right yet; plus, having a source of hpoo would be nice.

This has been my favorite setup so far.

These are simply regular old mono-tubs, fitted with fish tank air stones, and the bulk spawns divided up into seperate bags within the tubs.

This way, if you contam a section early, you can simply remove a part of the bulk, without losing your entire tub.

Since I incubate spawn at around 75 degrees, tin foil is used to cover each of the seperate spawns until they are popping their first pins.

I still fan, and mist here and there, but the air stones make up for any of the times I just can't get around to it.

Crake,

Originally (10 + years ago) I did an 'ice chest with plexiglas window in its top' type FC .... as depicted in earlier versions of the PF Tek. Humidification and FAE was accomplished using an ultrasonic humidifier. The ultrasonic's output was 'dried out' using a series of plumbed 2 liter bottles .... then later a timer with the bottles. The ultrasonic and plumbed in bottles made the whole set-up look like a TOTAL DRUG LAB. It did work well. Servicing the ultasonic and the bottles was a hassle.

Recently, I have used monotubs. Simple 'set and forget' is appealing. They have worked well. I have lost whole tubs due to contamination. Also, I like to peek and fiddle .... so my personality works against the monotub concept.

Recently, I have used the Shotgun style FC and it has worked well. I love the passive aspect of the Shotgun's humidification and FAE. I can do multiple trays (different strains and bulk substrates in the same FC) (and ability to toss a single contaminated tray). I do mist and fan to initiate fruiting and this causes me worry (TYRANY OF THE TERRARIUM) as I travel a lot and am gone for periods of time.

I've still have the ultasonic humidifier and a cool mist as well as a fogger .... and I think for my next grow I will do a FC with some 'timed automated misting (via the ultrsonic or fogger) and 'timed automated FAE with the cool mist running dry ..... or some combination thereof ...... automated extra humidification / FAE / evaporation with the passive humidification and FAE of the shotgun FC or monotub.

Long round'about way to say I am still experimenting and fiddling and fabricating.

Good luck. Have fun.

Rico

Hm for Cakes I really like the plastic cake box thing you can et at walmart.

It locks on the bottom as to store humidity

It's compact so you can be sneaky

It's cheap and has plenty of room for 4-5 cakes at a time.

It gave my friend good results and it sure as hell will give me good resutls as well.

So we have a lot of aspiring mono-tubs out there and a couple shotguns... Very interesting. One thing I must say is I'm not quite too familiar with the mono setup. I does sound appealing to a working person... if it truly IS set and forget.

Thanks for the pictorial Glacier, I love a good visual. That is my hope that I could coax people to plaster a couple of good or original pix up here... Maybe drag an idea out that no one has seen or heard of yet, but I'm not picky.

As for me, well... I haven't had ANYTHING in a long time. I'm going to do <THIS> sometime in the future (modified of course). I voted OTHER for myself... the second pic in that link doesn't fall into any of the categories I assigned.

Keep em' coming everybody...

just switched to the monotub and have found that its the way to go. its as easy as it gets to construct. i like to tinker here and there so i cant quite call it set and forget, but it does require very low maintenance. I work and go to school, so often times i cant get to my setup for a day or two, making the monotub even more convenient. I open mine up atleast twice a day and im yet to see contamination, thank the mushroom god.

Is it really "automated" though? You have to keep the humidifiers filled with fresh water, set timers for ultrasonics, check humidity, deal with electrical components and cords, etc, etc. With all that damn gadgetry, you have to keep checking on it to make sure things are running smooth.

I'd rather set up my monotub and not worry about it again until harvest time. No outside components, no worries.

true it's not as easy as the set it and forget it of mono/double tubs, but once setup properly a greenhouse will give so much more fruiting space to work with.my 4 tier holds 6-8 12 quart sweater boxes which has produced much more than 3 mono tubs in my experience.plus if you get a contam in a mono tub the whole things fucked.all and all i only spend 30 minutes a week filling humidifiers and checking everything.it's all about preference.

The yield would depend on the size of the monotubs. I haven't had any problems with contams in a monotub, but I would rather have it isolated to a single tub rather than one tray contaminating an entire greenhouse with mold spores flying around from a blowing coolmist humidifier. It definitely is a preference thing though.

good point on the mold...greenhouse saves on space also. as apposed to 3 or 4 mono tubs.

Care to put that to a challenge? I will bet anyone that I can outgrow, in dry wieght, same size grow room or closet, with tubs compared to greenhouses.

You can stack tubs, and yeilds grow from edge to edge of the tub.

Green houses have several small trays inside of them, leaving tons of unused space around the edges of your trays. Even if all your trays touch one another, the space between the plastic edges is wasted.

That is like saying that if you put two small trays inside a 18 gallon tub, you are going to get a higher yield than if you spawned bulk from in the entire tub, cased, and fruited.

There is no way.

Tubs are the most efficiant use of growing space there is.

There only advantage I have found over a greenhouse, is not having to restack your tubs, when you need to get inside of one.

The greenhouse design allows you to just unzip, and remove trays, instead of having to manipulate several stacked tubs to get to the bottom one.

But grow area compared to dry yields, tubs will win hands down, in any room or closet. Let's not spread mis-information.

Alright Glacier I challenge you. You go ahead and grow an amount of substrate in tubs then grow the same amount in a greenhouse with the largest tubs feasible and get back with the results .

I've never heard of a "shotgun" FC until this thread. I guess I'll have to use the search :-)

I've got my first monotub colonizing right now. In the past I've used bins & perlite, but didn't like fanning or dealing with the perlite.

Its been a while since I had it up and running but my greenhouse was practically a mushroom factory where as long as I had things timed out well so new projects were going in as I disposed of old ones there was a period of time where there were mushrooms being harvested on a near daily basis:rockon:
